“Gallery of Poems”: Dramatic Romanticism by Vlisco

By BellaNaija.com

This is the first collection from Vlisco since the dutch company was bought by international private equity group, Actis.
In the business of fashion, boardroom decisions can have an effect on the creative side. For Vlisco, this shift in ownership seems very positive. The new collection is dramatic and romantic. We especially love the majestic backdrop of these ad campaign images as well as the styling and the models ‘royal’ gait.

**

Once upon a time, Vlisco created a mysterious new fabric collection called ‘Gallery of Poems’. Dreams wander, floating into your own fairyland. Step into a new world and view the designs as objects of inspiration. Some designs will magically transform into a piece of art, adding a romantic touch to the poetic drama, while others illustrate a surrealistic passing of time. The decorative collection is intensified by a flamboyant colour palette. ‘Gallery of Poems’ makes you feel like a fairytale beauty.

    • pop November 12, 2010 at 2:53 AM

thank goodness!! now this is what i call REAL design and very SKILLED! its too sophisticated that u cant even tell that the fabrics r african! unlike the other shit i been seeing here! tacky, n cut n sew nonsense. even the photoshoot seff is sooooooooo on POINT! thank u very much! lovely outfits

      • Gbemi November 12, 2010 at 8:59 PM

The fabric is NOT African. Vlisco was founded in Holland has been making printed fabrics since 1846. They have been in this game before our grandparents were born, hence the ‘SKILL and SOPHISTICATION’ you enthusiastically ascribe to them.
The ‘s**t’ you claim to have been seeing here represents hours, days and weeks spent dreaming, conceiving and executing. If you would only stop all the vicious attacks and realise that, in spite of all the challenges, the person whose ‘tacky, cut and sew nonsense’ you criticize has made an effort.
These fabrics are in the 45 to 60 Euros range. That’s like 10 to 12k Naira for 6 yards. That’s at least 500% more than some other ankara fabrics. They can afford the ‘on POINT’ photoshoot, the young designers you attack cannot and if they even dare charge more than a couple thousand Naira, you’ll go at them for being ‘overpriced’.

FYI Vlisco has since stopped printing fabric for the European markets. they focus totally on the African market. They do not produce these fabrics here. We import them!

        • p November 13, 2010 at 12:51 AM

we dont need a history lesson. thankyou very much mate. these designs are hot and they r of a higher calibar than what we been seeing

        • Yemi November 15, 2010 at 7:52 PM

Well said! People here sometimes are soooo quick to pour out vitriol and bile without knowing the full facts or being able to do the things they are quick to criticize themselves.

        • ngum November 16, 2010 at 10:19 PM

couldn’t have put it better myself gbemi. african does not equal low quality. we need to encourage our designers and constructively critique their work. vlisco were once novices too.

    • L.A Chick-Fashion Unlimited November 12, 2010 at 4:05 AM

Love the way Vlisco celebrate our African fabric in those pictures. The attention to every detail makes them a masterpiece. The way the model hairstyle match the design on the pillar, the vibrant color of the fabric against the neutral background, and the variety of the style featured… My favorite picture is the first one. This picture depicts fashion itself: decadent, edgy and glamorous. I dey put eyes for those bags oh; they look so posh! I see myself rocking Downtown L.A with one of them already!

    • L.A Chick-Fashion Unlimited November 12, 2010 at 4:14 AM
