Y! Magazine asks “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Tonto Dikeh?” | Nollywood Star/Musician covers the new revamped issue of Y!

Tonto Dikeh Y Naija Magazine - December 2012 - BellaNaija002Just in time for Christmas, the 10th issue of Y! Magazine is out, and this new edition is certainly a first for a lifestyle magazine in Nigeria. The magazine, unveiled exclusively to invitation-only guests at the Annual Y! Magazine Black Ball in Lagos on Sunday, 16 December 2012 has controversial singer and actress Tonto Dikeh on its cover – but, in a bold move, it’s an illustrated cover!

“We are excited to have pushed the envelope,” said its editor-in-chief, Chude Jideonwo. “Y! Magazine launched with a bold artistic presentation which was the Omotola cover, and it’s a tradition we have re-ignited. In the new media space, the place of the magazine as a conversation starter might be undergoing a makeover, but the art and essence of the magazine should remain the same. It stands at a unique position as a media event and a cultural catalyst, provoking and driving the popular dialogue with features, conversations, imagines, narrations, even controversy. Like the venerable magazine editor Tina Brown has said – you want to publish something that generates energetic debate; otherwise, why would you want to publish it?

With a cover story themed “How do you solve a problem like Tonto Dikeh?” that investigates the cultural phenomenon that Ms. Dikeh has become, it kicks off a new Y! Magazine cover philosophy to give deeper insight, beyond predictable interviews, into the Nigerian culture and issues zeitgeist.

Tonto Dikeh Y Naija Magazine - December 2012 - BellaNaija004

The cover illustration is by Bolaji Iwayemi, and the photography for the inside pages is by the iconic Kelechi Amadi-Obi, with styling by Toyin Lawani of Tiannah Styling.

As always, Y! Magazine is a skilful mix of issues, lifestyle, and culture. There is a feature on Nigeria’s visionary mega-church pastors, sex and the single Christian, ‘Under Attack’ which explores Muslim stereotypes, and ‘Believe it or Not’ which interrogates young Nigerian atheists.

The delicious 8-page Christmas Special shares the colours, designs, movies, and songs that should keep you company this season, and over a dozen celebrities – including Wizkid, Toke Makinwa and others – share what they call their ‘most memorable Christmas.

The entertainment pages include interviews with Iyanya, Joseph Benjamin, Andre Blaze, Dammy Krane, and Niyola, and Y! Magazine also unveils the first in its Annual Y! Magazine Best Dressed List – 20 young celebrities make the list this year!

And be sure to read an exclusive interview with former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his Ota residence.

And for Y! Magazine, its last issue for 2012 is also one for celebration. “We do know something about faith. If we aren’t making a big deal about our big move in being Nigeria’s first illustrated lifestyle magazine cover, it is because of our facility with faith,” said its editor’s letter this edition. “Faith in trusting the global-citizen bonafides of our readers as we push the envelope with the concept and content of our covers and our magazine. Or for that matter to be the one magazine that has not missed one edition since it launched 30 months ago in this famously impossible media market.

Y! is available in stores and with vendors in Lagos, Abuja, Port-Harcourt, Benin and Owerri. It is also available in all House of Tara Stores in Lagos, Abuja, Ilorin, Port-Harcourt, Benin, Kano, Ibadan and Kaduna and with Y! campus representatives in 19 states within the country. You can also pay for the magazine with your mobile phone and have it delivered to you at no extra charge.

Personaly I think Nigeria needs a Tonto Dikeh. Someone who isn’t afraid to be herself even in the face of huge critisism. In this environment we are thought to conform so its refreshing to see someone who is very comfortable in her own. Skin uneven if it makes other people uncomfortable. Say what you will about Tonto Dikeh but one cannot deny that with her what you see is what you get.

    • Princess December 17, 2012 at 5:20 pm

Doesn’t conform you say, comfortable in her own skin, not affected by what people say. Oh please, she is none of the above. She doesn’t conform abi, yet she speaks foneh (foneh with poor diction, pronunciation, plus gbagauing). Is that someone who is real, and who is herself. 10years ago, before Nollywood, is that how she was speaking? Lol. She is very much affected by what people say, and her over dramatising, is the way she is covering it. Have you read her tweets, her responses when there’s negative news about her. Thats not what someone who doesn’t send does. The video of Ay’s littel girl singing her song, did you read her response on twitter? Come on, she had to compete with a child for attention. Yet she doesn’t send. She is a narcissist to the core and an attention seeker. She gets high on the attention and craves it. Its all an act. Psychologists have a term for that. So please dont make her out to be someone worth congratulating. On her interview with Toolz, she said she feeds off negative energy and criticisms from people. Is that normal? Drama Queen she is, Thick skin, she sure aint got. Look back at examples of such types, from Hollywood to Nollywood, they don’t end well, and she should watch it. When fame comes along, you need to handle it well and be grounded. Those who have lasted in this business are those who are grounded, and have not let fame get to their head. She needs people around her who will tell her the truth, and not yes men and women. She cant keep up this act for long.

      • Yinda December 19, 2012 at 6:35 am

Princess you said it all. So impressed with your opinions and conclusion. By the way, Tonto is suffering from a personality disorder called HISTRIONIC PERSONALITY DISORDER. Basically someone who does things excessively to gain attention. If you really want people like that to suffer or cry, don’t give them the attention. Boom! we would have an animal in our midst. Well said Princess.

    • Purpleicious Babe December 18, 2012 at 1:26 pm

      I beg to differ

      • Schultz December 18, 2012 at 9:46 pm

See who is talking. You are trying to diss someone meanwhile you can’t compose a proper sentence without unnecessary weird abbreviations and characters.

  • Demmy December 17, 2012 at 5:06 pm

I love how Tonto looks. She’s so beautiful. Niyola looks amazing too. x

  • sonalove December 17, 2012 at 5:33 pm

Actually there is definitely more to her.. its not what you see is what you get. she definitely has sides to her that we most def cannot see.. although i think she has a strong personality but at the same time I think she most def doesn’t do it in the right sense… she’s way too spontaneous and i am sure by forty she might just regret most of her spontaneous choices.. if she doesnt learn and calm down before forty its a scary ride from then on.. just saying.. i think she should be more interested in improving on her craft which is ACTING.. she can get training professionally like OC Ukeje.. its one thing to have the natural talent and its another to develop it.. rather than making a name from scandal and unnecessary publicity. In all nice cover…

    • sarafina December 17, 2012 at 5:43 pm

Painment. Erm! She’s snatched your faves wig! Deal!

      • Posh December 17, 2012 at 10:45 pm

Of course it’s Tonto!! do you have to reason to know it? ……from her first response and “adjusting her halo” I knew straight up it was her :-)
Tonto, just use another commenting name and change your style of grammer ppl have already known ur language structure……then you can keep responding. It’s “fun” to read your comments and back lash here

      • Peperempe December 18, 2012 at 1:48 am

Lol!!! It’s a Tonto wannabe. you almost have the bad spelling and confusing English down to a tee. Just make sure to stick a “z” in place of “s” and stick more z’s in random places. For example, “snatched your favez wig! Dealzz!

      • Diva December 18, 2012 at 9:20 am

LMAOOOOOOOO!!! TONTO, YOU JUST FELL YOUR OWN HAND…LMFAO

  • Kanyin December 17, 2012 at 5:45 pm

Does niyola always have to be half naked. Put on some clothes gurl

    • Msunderstood December 17, 2012 at 6:17 pm

Haba, is she half naked. I’m a chic n I’m loving those abs. Especially after spending months tryn to lose d post natal pouch-so much exercise n eating healthy, yet my abs isn’t as flat as it used to b. Shine on Niyola, it’s not easy Jo.

  • MyView December 17, 2012 at 6:16 pm

She is the Lindsay Lohan of Nollywood, know for being famous for the wrong reasons not talent. She is always in the news for running around naked, making a fool of herself on twitter, being vulgar, her tattoos, her bleached out skin, she can’t act, she can’t sing, and she can’t speak good English. What is so admirable about that? Anyone can be those things if you want. Being an intelligent, talented and well respected lady takes work and she can’t cope so she chooses the easy way out, big deal! Has the moral climate of our society frozen over that we pretend there’s any depth to someone like this?

    • Purpleicious Babe December 18, 2012 at 1:35 pm

      perhaps it frozen MyView….. lool

  • jennietobbie December 17, 2012 at 6:22 pm

    She’s nice.

  • jade December 17, 2012 at 6:27 pm

Oh please @sonalove and @princess, Tonto is getting exactly what she is looking for and that is attention. She is bold and uncaring of the negativity of others. Really what has she done that any normal human wouldnt. can you imaginge being attacked all the time for something u love and others love about you. There has to be a breaking point at some time. Any human being would lash out, albeit maybe in different ways but none the less to let of some steam. She is beautiful and talented and does as she please which is neither against the law or affecting others. If you dont like her style that is ok, but should she change to facilitate you all, HELL NO!!! The real point in laugh is when u accept who you are and love it. She is living her life on her own terms, where so many of us, falter. You go girl!!!!

    • Teni December 17, 2012 at 7:01 pm

I get what you are saying, but the issue is, she has to draw the line, even for herself. Despite all the talk of she doesn’t care what anyone says. Its getting out of hand. Thats how train wrecks start. A good example of this, was her response to the video AY put up. I mean that video was cute, and funny. Its something thousands of kids do all over the world on youtube, and everyone thinks its cute. Even global superstars, take it as a compliment, and laugh over it. But noooooooooooo Madam Tonto had to go all gangster and take offence Come on, that one goes even way beyond attention seeking. She should check herself before she wrecks herself. I am waiting for anyone of her fans to defend why she got so upset after that video was put up. Please I am waiting for the spin y’all will put on the reason why it was okay for her to do that. I though your Idol is brazen and confident and doesn’t give a hoot. SO, a 5year old, offended her too, abi kini.

  • jyde December 17, 2012 at 6:53 pm

As long as POKO doesnt put that scruffy dog inside her handbag theres still hope.
    no be nijah we dey?
I close mouth b4 una vex.

  • Jo December 17, 2012 at 7:09 pm

As for this Niyola’s interview, so her age is 20s? It’s best not to mention anything at all.
Tonto is entertaining. I don’t mind it especially in this Nollywood where most of the people look old, bloated, boring, and seem very eager to get married.

  • G December 17, 2012 at 7:40 pm

ah ah, princess…what kind of long lecture is this on top ur opinion oh,which u are entitled 2 have and which noone else must share…abeg save it,it’s nt that serious…

  • Tae December 17, 2012 at 7:46 pm

I think Tonto is living her life the way she thinks is best for her and that is commmendable. Yes she will have some regrets when she’s older but guess what so will we all. Life is too short not to live it to the fullest.

  • Eve December 17, 2012 at 8:36 pm

LMAO@ princess. I swear u crackd me down lol. Truly that @sarafina might be Tonto cos there’s no diff b/w the razzness. Tonto needs to calm down I know its fame but she just have to. Look tru the lines of her other collegue fm Gene, rita, ini ,MJ and the rest, one can hardly spot any such negativity and razzness cos they know they are role models, mentors. On STV when she was interviewed, she said and I quote “if any of my family tried to say anything negative abt me, I cut them off bla bla bla” Abasi who says such thing? It was awkward I must say. Even on twitter, same issue. when something different is been said about her she insults ur father and mother, common girlfrnd who does that? Which celebrity does that?. I used to like her years back infact,if she’s not on any movie, it makes it incomplete but now Have lost interest on her. The wild Tattoo, diction etc. *sigh*

  • Kike December 17, 2012 at 8:56 pm

What I don’t get is how this Tonto Dikeh person can say Rita Dominic is her role model?? Yet she’s nothing like Rita… Beats me!

  • meli December 18, 2012 at 1:19 am

train wreck who CANNOT ACT FOR ISH (over acting and speaking phonet is not acting). No class, because you cant buy class. And my final word is she is demonic, I am positive she chants her energy from a negative source. I feel sorry for her future.

  • Mimi Shakers December 18, 2012 at 1:20 am

  • Opsy December 18, 2012 at 10:54 am

@Princess, you really surprise me. For someone who is not a fan of Tonto, you work really hard to get updates on her. The epistle you wrote above reflects envy. If you don’t like her, just ignore her!

    • Purpleicious Babe December 18, 2012 at 1:43 pm

@ I dont think she got updates, it everywhere dont u see it…..

Am not a fan but u see these things and its irritating in the very least. This is not envy.. it is the TRUTH. Of all people to ENVY.. pls.

    the title states the obvious….

  • Miriam December 19, 2012 at 12:15 pm

Come on, do Nigerians read at all? I am beginning to wonder, whether we all went to school, or we have abadnoned our reading skills for watching TV, looking at pictures and typing on our smartphones. A couple of lines is what you call an epistle. Its either you are an illiterate, or simply mentally lazy. Learn to read more people, pick up a book and read, broaden your mind. How are you going to teach your children to read? The level of spoken and written English these days is apalling. To be honest.
