Taio Cruz scores his first UK No. 1 with ‘Break Your Heart’

TaioCruz-01-bigYes, Bella Naija has started our ‘claiming’ once again and we are the first to admit it!
If you are of Nigerian/African heritage, you are ‘liable’ to be celebrated on BN!
Taio Cruz is a UK born and raised musician – he is the son of a Nigerian lawyer and Brazilian mother. Taio has been on the music scene for a couple of years – Some have called him the ‘British Ne-Yo’ mainly because of his singing, songwriting and music production ability.
His latest single ‘Break Your Heart‘ from his forthcoming sophomore album – Rokstarr just hit the top of the UK charts this week! Making it Mr. Cruz’s first ever No 1 hit.
Congrats to him.
You can listen to the song below and click over to youtube to watch the video

the same Taio Cruz that refuses to put women of colour in his videos is what we as nigerians are meant to be claiming?

Apart from his last song he did with the sugababes and busta ryhmes the man is not all that (music wise). Anyway why complain – thats what UK artists do – when they go to america they now put black women in their videos (remember craig david)

putting white babes in his video is probably the reason is number one…its a business ploy…i am sure he “loves” black women…regardless i think he should be celebrated.

@ Nikki at least unlike Dare and other Nigerian artistes Taoi lives in a multi racial society so there is actually a good reason why Caucasian women are in his video….plus his Mother MAYBE Caucasian cos she is Brazilian….the nigerians who put white women in their videos have no excuse cos it is obvious they are going out of their way to find oyibo women….

u gotta love Bella sa, babes has defended herself already…lol…but i will still say it sa i bet the boy no send Naija!

ok let me go n listen to d song again!!!me likey

I swear, some Nigerians really make me sick at times. His mother is Brazilian, so if he wants to put only the whitest, white women in the world in his videos, wetin concern you?!
Who cares if he has Naija, Brazilian, or Irish girls in his video. Always creating issue when there is none!

The same taio cruz or whatever the f*ck that he calls himself that seems to have an issue AND said it that the whole black and white girl thing would make him react by “NEVER PUTTING BLACK GIRLS IN HIS VIDEO”

If he wasn’t such a dunderhead,WHY did he not say that reaction might make him NOT feature whitey in his video.??

Anyway,PRIDE magazine handed him his crusty behind in a few words –They sent him back home with a few choice words…to basically go and look at his family and see how proud the black women in it would be….etc.

All that he lives in a multi-cultural society tripe is just what it is—nonsense

The day we black women start recognising that the white women shouldn’t have to take the lead in the standards of everything would be an oh so new day.
It disgusts me,how this black artistes constantly portray that white is best, yellow is next and black is ewww attitude.

Dare alade been the number one serial offender.Acting as if without a white chick in his video, his life would not be complete..(and i don’t care if he is married to a balck woman)

By the way taios mother is BLACK.He has just always been like that.

My point of view is that nobody can make choices for anyone on terms of partners etc.Wether blue green or pink be with whoever floats your boat.
BUT when you are blessed to be in a position where you can portray something to the world, then all some of us ask is that when you are “selling” your art—please include the minority too–in this case..BEAUTIFUL BLACK WOMEN.

    Orin e o ti e dun–

Sounds like a pack of mentally deranged birds let loose in a studio…

    Ki lon ko sef??

Anyway if nonsense, meaningless songs can reach the top of the charts..(Lady Poopoo anyone??)
Why am i not surprised at this assault on my eardrums??

Oko oyinbo—keep on singing–at least you have your fan base—

i totally agree with you. the song is utterly meaningless. i haven’t ever seen his videos but I shan’t be buying his music ever. nonsense song

    September 26, 2009 at 3:07 pm

also this guy doesnt have anything to do with naija, so why is bella featuring him?
he might find it insulting, “HM!”

this guy is not a naija artist and will never be one.
he probably doesnt even care for his nigerian blood, since his mind is so preoccupied with oyibo shiz.

    September 26, 2009 at 3:12 pm

“putting white babes in his video is probably the reason is number one…its a business ploy…i am sure he “loves” black women…regardless i think he should be celebrated.”

so i guess youre saying its okay for him to sell out just to make money or become “popular”
this is what makes me mad.
why cant you bring what you have to the table and stop looking elsewhere just to get recognized and popular.
this is exactly what they want.
they sell themselves out just to look good for whitey (once again) and then they get their brownie points.
its a lot deeper than that as well. i just cant stand people that do things (example: darey art lade or whatever he calls himself).
he may be married to a black woman, but you shouldnt have to feature a ton of non black women just so you can “gain” your respect.
all of these people na rubbish.

    September 26, 2009 at 3:19 pm

here is all i want to say:

So you people saying that the “color” thing is not an issue, you dont care to be misrepresented, right?
so you would still buy an album of a person that can care less, or who doesnt give a damn about you?
why would you support such an artist? that money you will be spending on this cheap lame music is the same money he will use to pay for the next group of oyibos in his music videos.
    its a lose-lose situation.
so its best not to support a man that can care less about his color. obviously he only cares about whiteys. so why in the hell should naija people care about him, talk less of supporting the fool.

    think of it this way.
if the tables were turned and 50% of the white artist were only using black women and said they could never use white women in any of their videos, how do you think white people will react?
    there will be an UPROAR!!
but all we nigerians can do is sit down and take the back seat, like always.
some people are getting too comfortable with being second best. they dont mind being referred to as least best even.

please explain and tell me why we should support an artist that doesnt give a damn about his own people or even color?
please explain, cause it doesnt make sense.

  18. eggone

    September 26, 2009 at 6:06 pm

I am certain that majority of the people who’ll buy his songs are WHITE. are you really suggesting he ignores them? what if he prefers white women in his video or white women overall… what do you expect him to do? Appease your self loathing black self who feels half naked women in videos are what should represent them, whan there are many black women out there doing positive things that would empower and represent black women in a positive light.

Instead of focusing on more positive issues, you are here talking about how black women are not featured in some USELESS music vidoe. The hip hop/rap artist have enough black women shaking their black booty for you guys, i think that is enough, we don’t need some british pop star to perpetuate that just because he is black.

I can say proudly that there is no way some half naked black woman featured in a music video will EVER MAKE ME PROUD and it is far from representative of me as a black woman. Stop relying on this young hustlers to represent you or make you feel beautiful as they will do anything for money or fame. Lets drop this stupid issue now as i don’t see how it will improve the quality of life of the blackrace.

  19. luvlife

    September 26, 2009 at 8:18 pm

why did you have to add this line ” Appease your self loathing black self who feels half naked women in videos are what should represent them”. could you not have made your point without that line? why do you all have to pull out daggers when addressing each other. whoever talked about self-loathing black self. she’s making a point, that doesn’t mean she hates her self or her color. you guys make me sick and disgusted. how can we ever move forward in Nigeria if all we ever want to do is be at each other’s throat all the time.

  20. KayBayBay

    September 26, 2009 at 8:25 pm

I dunno i heard this song on tv the other day i thought it was alright, but as someone who lives in the UK i just think he maybe had the white girls in the vid to attract a wider (mainly white) audience because i know for sure its them buying his records….the oyinbos love him over here….

I could be wrong but thats just my two cents….xx

    September 26, 2009 at 9:51 pm

excuse me? who was talking about half naked black women? PLEASE TELL ME WHERE I SAID HE SHOULD USE HALF NAKED BLACK WOMEN?
stop talking out of your ass cause you arent making sense.
look at Banky W’s recent video. was the girl half naked? NO. but she was beautiful and classy.
    thats what im talking about.
not once did i say “he should feature half naked black women”
i still dont see the point of bella featuring him on this site. he can probably care less what we think since we arent important.
like i said, some nigerians feel too comfortable being regarded as second best, least best.
do you think if the tables were turned and a white man did the same exact thing he did, there wouldnt be any problems?
but for Nigerians, we have grown so used to it, we have just grown to accpect it.
EGGONE, please make a more valid point next time, cause right now you just sound ridiculous.

Oh my days Bella Naija fans you guys are too fast for me. I just came back from my friends birthday and we saw this guys video on official UK40. I was telling my friend that this guy is the godfather of all Nigerian musicians who use oyinbo girls in their video (meaning the look up to him as their role modelin that trend). I have never seen this guy’s video with a black chick. the funny thing is that b4 I even have made my point Bella followers have already laid out the guy finish! men some people on this thread, think like me. you take the words right out of my fingers b4 I type them. I am so happy that people have exposed this man for what he is. I didn’t even know he had anything to do with naija sef. but I thought that his ‘star’ song was a no 1, well now I know I am wrong. pls-o, did anyone see dj rascal’s new song on number 4 or 8 (I think…) It also has multi-pale skin girls. In fact it is now that I know where nigerian musicians get their inspiration from. The americans don’t do this-o! yeah finally everything is beginning to make sense to me.

    September 26, 2009 at 11:41 pm

    i agree 10000000000000000%

yeah its all these artist using white woman as a way to sell themselves out just to look good for Mr.Whitey.
dont they know they are just making themselves look bad and letting the white man win.
white people have truly succeeded in the failure of some of these men.
if your idea of using white women is to get you more popular than SHAME ON YOU!!
    all these artist sef.
i dont even know why bella features them.
do they care about us? is their music trying to appeal to us? no way.
so why in the hell are they on this site?
    hm! na wa oo.

  25. nikki

    September 26, 2009 at 11:42 pm

don’t worry maybe when he has to make a new video in america with a woman of colour then his eyes will open (I doubt it thou)

for those who say it doesn’t matter why did Craig David use black women for his videos when he went to America?

As for him being half white – abeg look at him, one of my friends knows this guy from back in the day and he is black – please people from brazil can be black as well.

The man has even said he will not cast black women in his videos – its idiots like this that make me laugh – what colour will his kids be?

anyway since na oyinbo who are buying his music he should continue using them as his leading ladies in his videos.

  26. eggone

    September 27, 2009 at 12:50 am

@the amaka, you are obviously in need of serious prayers. you were complaining about the lack of black women in his video right? and from what i can see the white girls were scantily clad, so i suppose that is what you’d expect if the girls were black right? i hope you get my point now.

Secondly, i have no idea who Banky is, and kudos to him if he used a classy black woman in his video. But my question to you is how has that made you feel more worthy as a black woman? has Banky’s use of a black woman or lack thereof had any real change to your existence as a black woman? does it validate your beauty? or make you feel accepted? Improved the quality of your life even?

I really am loathe to understand this craze of black (naija) women requesting their male artiste feature black women in their music videos. I mean where do you get off demanding that? do you know this person from Adam, his preference? his circle of friends? and what he represents? Why are you appointing him your representative? he probably has little in common with you aside from his nigerian origin and skin tone. So because of that, you now demand that he must satisfy your ‘needs’.

Is it that you have no shame at all, that of all the black people who are doing great positive things out there that will make you proud, you have decided to focus on a singer whom from what i have heard is a young, vacuous being whom, you probably will be unable to have a decent conversation with should you have the oppurtunity to have one with him at all. Why elevate these people whom you hardly know and, appoint them your representative. I doubt if it is a role he wishes to take on, thank you very much.

And if your aspiration is to appear in the music video, then you should create awareness about the lack of black women in music videos and how that level of discrimination is affecting your career and potential livelihood, the same way blacks in other areas are fighting and struggling for recognition. Stop sitting blaming this young hustler for not promoting you guys, he is most likely doing what is expected of his ilk. I am sure you will do whatever to the top career wise which, might include kissing your ‘white’ boss’s ass (if you are based abroad) to climb up the career ladder and completely disregarding your fellow black ‘sisters’ who are lower placed, when you go out on your champagne lunches with your ‘white’ colleagues. How do you expect the poor black waiter who serves you or waits on you to feel when he watches you cavorting with the ‘witheys’…

the saying let he without sin… comes to roost here.

It is not their job/duty to promote black beauty. Love yourself please and leave others to idolise who they want to idolise. If it affects you, go for therapy or read your Bible especially the part that tells us that we were all wonderfully and beautifully made by God. There is no other validation greater than that.

  27. eggone

    September 27, 2009 at 1:07 am

@luvlife, if you had not chosen those very choice words to describe this singer whom you barely know in your comment below, i would have taken you more seriously.
However i seriously believe that it is one who loathes themselves so much that will feel the need to scream about issues like this. Especially because i don’t see how featuring bikini clad black women in his video will add anything positive to the black race, except were one can prove that she was not selected to be in it (video) purely on the basis of her skin colour – now that will be a matter for the courts and an employment law issue. Thankfully the laws in UK have provision for such. I can’t say that much for our beloved country were tribalism and the like is rife.

  28. Bukky

    September 27, 2009 at 1:42 am

@ Eggone its true he is free to use any race he wants in his video after all na im get the song…but that is not to say Amaka doesnt have a point, she has a good point…A lot of this black folks use Caucasians because they feel it will sell their songs better, they think their videos will be regarded as class when they use white women…..Its time people get rid of that mentality;that oyibo = classiness!!!it’s BS if you ask me…and if you are talking about self loathing people, it is this black folks who INSIST on using white women that loathe themselves

    September 27, 2009 at 4:30 am

Bukky, you did what i call hitting the nail on the head.
the guy said in his own words that he will never feature black women.
i really dont care what the man does.
but why in the world should bella feature him on this site? does he give a damn about us? do you really think he makes his music to appeal to the nigerian audience or even the black audience? NO.
so i really dont see the point of this post.

and please eggone i am happy about myself.
but look between the lines, read my post again.
this has nothing to do with making me feel good about myself, but when you go to other countries (especially south africa where there are a TON+++ of black women, you have no excuse) just to use white women to give your video some “class” what does that say? letting Mr.Whiey win again.
EGGONE, if you like your own people to regard you as classless, and least best, then go your way.
a man shouldnt have to diss his own people or go running on planes to other countries just to sale records.

@ the white colleagues and the white boss part: PLEASE GIVE ME A BREAK, THAT IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING IVE HEARD FROM YOU.
    what a stupid example.

Not impressed with this Taio boy at all, especially after reading this silly, childish quote of his:

“I like to put girls in my video that I think are hot. If a really hot black girl came to a casting, she’d be in my video. I think that people even focusing on the race issue in my videos is a problem. And I would almost react by never putting black girls in my video, because I’m that type of person – rebellious. I’d be like, ‘If that’s how you’re gonna be, I’m never gonna put black girls in my videos.’”

Boo, Taio, boooo!!!!!!!!!! Rebellious ko, idiotic ni!

I think the Taio Cruz bashing is ok for now, as for those saying its not an issue please think a bit deeper. And no i don’t need video hoes in hip hop videos validating my self worth, I get enough validation from the Lord.

Abeg this our half naija/half brazil brother is a truely equal opprotunites employer – he is single handedly bring the races together. we should leave him – when he wants money and his record sales start dropping he will do what all seasoned artists do and become black………………

In fact the UN should appoint him as their diversity champion – Angelina Jolie ur time is up there is a new kid on the block bring the races together.

@ eggone, my comment very obviously refer to my sentiments about the song content. I said the song sounds like the anthem of self-absorbed, self-obsessed immature p***k because those are the only people who can conceptualize such a song. Taio Cruz or no, anyone who releases a single such as “Break your heart” cannot earn my respect musically or otherwise.

At first I thought it was a joke when some other commentors mentioned this. why do some black pple talk like this can u ever hear a white man say this kind of thing…No! you won’t.

Infact I feel sorry for this Taio guy, becos if TMZ make mistake catch this quote, His own has finished in America, you know the Americans they don’t play with this this kind of racial nonsense. i dont know why this uk musicians cannot learn from Craig david, i dunno why?!

    To Eggone

But the point is Taio’s video was not a shake your ass video. The FACT the black man should elevate our women the same way the white man elevates his women. You watch a Robbie Wiilams video and you KNOW it’s gonna be with a white woman. You watch a Brad Pitt film and if he’s gonna get it on with anyone, you know it’s gonna be with a white. Why do we as black elevate a race that don’t give a dam about us ? And too all the black men who come with the usual “Black women have attitude” Well let me tell you something if we start treating black women the same way youb treat white women. They would not have attitude. Also a lot of guys mistake a womans shyness for attitude.
