A shining star dimmed too soon – Rising Nigerian Musician Da Grin has passed away

Da Grin RIPThis is the sort of story that you never want to report.
A rising star cut short in his prime.
Today, 22nd of April 2010, Nigerian rapper, Da Grin – real name – Oladapo Olaitan Olaonipekun passed away at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
23 year old, Da Grin was involved in a ghastly accident during the early hours of 14th of April 2010. According to reports, his car collided with a stationary trailer (heavy duty vehicle), he sustained injuries but was rushed to the hospital.
For days after the accident, goodwill messages flowed from fans and colleagues all around the world. All were hoping that he would recover and proceed with his career.
He had just been nominated for several Hip Hop World Awards and was still billed to perform at his first international show in May 2010 but it was not to be.
Da Grin passed away from reported ‘cardiac arrest’.
Since his death, tributes have been pouring in for this well respected and immensely talented artiste.

Our prayers are with Da Grin’s family. We pray for strength and grace to empower them through this tragedy.
We also pray for our country Nigeria and continent Africa, that we will rise above and develop so that young lives will not be lost due to poor infrastructure and failed systems.

Da Grin’s music and legacy lives on.

That we go out and come home safely in Nigeria is by the grace of God…I have seen stationery truck on that unlit third mainland bridge at night without any warning…Only in an uncivilized country will that happen.May God give us leaders that will enforce good laws(including road laws), may God give us citizens that will follow the laws,May God help us stop celebrating this leaders who have robbed us so much.May Da Grin’s soul rest in peace.May God give his family fortitude to bear the loss, may he comfort them and give them beauty for ashes!ah!This is too much o!

    April 23, 2010 at 1:52 pm

There are a number of perennial issues that Dagrin’s demise has brought to the fore once more.

Once again the proficiency of the Nigerian health system and government hospitals will and should be called into question. Was there adequate trauma care where he was treated.

Why do I know that we will still hear that a stationary or broken down vehicle caused the death of another person. The Police patrols should have identified the vehicle as a serious hazard and arranged forit to be removed immediately.

While we grieve, let it be known that all the politicians, oil bunkerers, dodgy businessmen, bank execs and their miserable ilk who are milking and cheating their way through the system whilst they plunder and steal the nation’s resources and money are responsible indirectly for the death of another rising star.

Possibly and perhaps if the money that is being stolen/looted had been applied to where it matters and is needed most rather than the personal bank accounts of the miscreants that claim to be guiding Nigeria’s direction, this as well as the myriad of deaths that occur daily in similar circumstances may have been averted.

can we all stop blaming naija for Da Grin’s death. so far, there has been no allegation of slow or inefficient medical response to his injuries. there are people abroad who stay in coma for week, years or months. some survive, some don’t, so the fact that he was in hospital for days an died does not automatically make it LUTH’s fault. and pls let’s not forget that the lorry or truck was stationary! i expect a driver who has working headlights and is not DUI to see a human being, how much more a truck. let’s also remember that there are roads “abroad” that have no street lights too. doesn’t change the fact that nigeria needs to sit up amenities wise!

    April 24, 2010 at 8:51 pm

olu, chaps and jenifer, you guys all meant well, because the death of da grin could have been averted and it hurts but please do not blame olu or any one.Nigerians at this stage, we have to care for ourselves because we have no leaders to care for us.We do not have good roads, try not to overspeed if possible reduce your speed to the bearest minimum because if you dont, you dont know what is there ahead of you.We should understand that when u have accident, there is no hospital to take you to,even the president had to be flown out, because the facilities are not on ground, even if the facilities are available, the money you have beeing saving for long do you want to spend it in the hospitals. The yoruba says “malu ti ko ni iru nidi oluwa lonba le sisnsin” and “omo ti ko ba ni iya ko ni ba won da egbo eyin”.
Our leaders have failed us,we are shouting and we have to keep shouting but in the process take care of your self and if anything happened you would know that at least you did your best.
    No drink drive,
no talking on the fone or texting when driving,
dont overspeed, eat more of vegetables and drink loads of water,
    keep fit,
dont drive around in the dead of the night,if you are late, stay where you
are if you cant, leave early
and if you have a broken car on the road pls put a lot of sign for the on coming vehicles behind you
It is your duty to keep your self safe.
These things happen in the western world too but they have good system that can help we dont.RIP DA DRIN may the lord console your family, and give the the fortitude to bear your loss.

To be honest, when I initially read the story I did “blame Naija”. Maybe I assumed wrongly — you raised some good pts — but the “blame” was b/c I’ve read that car accidents are the 2nd leading cause of death in West Africa. And then to travel for road myself?…chei! Maybe I was wrong but road problems for Naija no be small tin.

R.I.P Da Grin! You are loved, my friend!

  79. WaleAdeniji

    April 25, 2010 at 7:13 am

Whether people will believe this or not, this is yet as a result of failure on the part of our “looters”. Ohh! sorry leaders for that is what you consider them. I wish everyone of us will have the opportunity to get out of Nigeria for once and see the way things are done. In a normal society,no truck will be left on the road for a long time. It is the responsibility of the government to evacuate any faulty vehicle off the road so as not to allow it to endanger the lives of other road users. The roads we have in Nigeria are nothing but death traps talkless of having vehicles breaking down on them again. We have witness many death like this on our road and i cannot but pray that we won’t witness such again. But that is if you and i do it right. It is time for us to stand up and tell our “looters” that enough is enough. We cannot continue to have them up there when they’re not responsible to us. We cannot to drive on bad roads leading to the death of our promising youths. Da Grin tried all his best to become somebody out of nothing but still the system killed him. Its really a pity. Each time things of this nature occurs, you and i need to reflect and think of who will be the next person to go. It may be me, it may be you but we sure don’t want that. Come 2011, don’t sell your vote, lets vote for people like Fashola and not the rogues who will continue to milk us dry.

If money buys life his life would have been bought … we should all try as much as possible to stay on d positive side of things in life and be properly guided regardless of our status in d society.

Luth’s suppossed inefficiency to Grin’s carelessness, back up to our insensitive
leaders. Jennifer u need not be rude to Olu, he has the right to xpress himself.
Dagrin is gone and i pray he is in the right place[depends on how he led his life]
lesson for all of us, plan like you have a hundred years to spend but live your
life like today is the last.make peace with your maker, God and live right

It’s such a sad sad event…this young man’s death…just 23 years…yet my sadness at this goes beyond just his passing but more in wat the afterlife for him will be…Friends, please, i want u to reason this out with me thru till the end and not stop reading or phase out your mind… Where did this young man end up his life? Sincere, I never knew him until a day after his death…but when i got to connect him with his lyrics i had been hearing all around, i became really depressed about the whole situation…the young man’s lyrics were really gross, a sample of the decadence that is now prevalent in our society…mind you, I believe I could say something about music and what defiles or not…I’ve been there…had a huge influence in spreading Nas’ ‘Streets Disciple’ in Nigeria before I met Christ. and so going back to the young man, i realize he never knew Death was on the threshhold for him…it came so suddenly…and then he was in a coma where he couldnt have made restitutions or said prayers for forgiveness…I suspect the young man might have had such thots of what the afterlife could portend and thats why, as i read in one comment, he sang a song begging God to keep him from dying…
Heed! Da Grin, this young man died, (though I and some friends prayed to God to return him to life so he could come with a message about the reality of hell-the portion of all who live ungodly lives, and the holiness and justice of God) for a wake-up to you that you have no control over your life–safety measures in Nigeria or not!…
Would have liked to explain further but i believe this summary will make all the difference:
For it is appointed unto men once to die and after this the judgement…[and]…how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation…for the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord…for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life…[and]… to as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God even to them that believed on His name. (Heb 9:27; Heb 2: 3; Rom 6: 23; John 3: 16; John 1: 12)

the music industry is been plagued by so many fake artistes who pose as musicians. But one of the true talents whom God has brought out to lame light to be among the leading few has been snatched from us by the cold and ugly hands of death. it is really a pity and a heart breaking news. we will miss u cos u r real inspiration to some of us who r real fans of ur music. may the Lord grant u eternal rest in his bossom and may his perpetual light shine upon u. Rest in peace ‘THE GRIN’.

you Nigerians are so stupid, how can you say it’s God’s time, when the situation leading to the accidents are man made. all your leaders both politicians and the pastors and imam has all brainwashed you guys.

it’s time you guys start separating God, god, Allah from everyday reasoning.
A country without power, good roads, police, leaders and the country is so blessed, should be able to make the G7 countries, yet you are all suffering and cursing not smiling anymore. lol…. soon you would be dead.

my point is. the bad road could have led to the accidents which is a domino effect from the leaders.
but you guys are too quick to use God to leverage every condition. .

i commend u, and i pray for you.
from the people i spoke to who knew you, u kept it real always, never trying to be
something or someone you were not.
and thats what we need to remember as people, to make the best of the day, and live for today as tomorrow
    isn’t guaranteed.

makes it more painful. Listening to his music shows this dude is full of talent
and ready to deliver. Oh my, oh my, Olaitan is no doubt a RARE GEM.
Its evident we all love him, but God knows the best.
