Ankara Treats From Abuja to London – Dzyn Couture & MissDee host the “Ankara Generation” – Photos from the Event

The 3 Day “Ankara Generation” event took place in London from the 22nd to the 24th of July 2011. Our beloved ankara is appreciated all around the world and as you probably guessed, the event was well attended by members of the Nigerian community in London alongside people from other African countries and basically everyone who wanted to add some African spice to their wardrobe.

The “Ankara Generation” featured designs and accessories from two Abuja based fashion design labels, Dzyn Couture which is owned by sisters, Ogwa Iweze & Ofure Adive and MissDee by Adaora Nwodo. The Dyzn Couture collection consisted of skirts, dresses and jackets which were characterized by the intricate addition of sequins, stones and crystals for youthful and edgy, yet sophisticated looks. MissDee presented her “Western/African Chic” collection which included comfortable yet sassy daily wear with an ankara twist.

The Carlton Room of the Marriott Hotel in Maida Vale was filled with fashionstas  who received a stylish taste of ankara in the most attractive colours and patterns. There was a lot to see and buy – from clothes to purses, slippers, hair and neck pieces all made with traditional ankara. The men were not left out as there were kaftans, trousers and shirts. The event definitely left a mark on all the attendees.

With the success of the inaugural edition, many guests asked “Will the Ankara Generation be back for more in London next year?” – We’ll just have to wait and see!

Airline tickets of designers and staff, venue rental, venue decor, transportation and general logistics alongside the cost price of making these fabrics in Nigeria make 40 pounds a very reasonable price for these creative pieces dont you think? If this was some fashion sale by some italian or french designer we wont be moaning about the prices, lets stop the negativity and start supporting our own local talents ankara or whatever fabric it maybe…Love and peace.

My dear talk am again o!! I’ll happily pay 40 pounds to avoid dealing with my “come today, come tomorrow” tailor. The one that kills me is when I come to pick up the dress that he took my measurements for and it’s completely different style and size!!
