Coach of 17 Year Old Chika Amalaha claims She Tested Positive to Drugs because of Zobo Drink

20th Commonwealth Games - Day 2: Weightlifting
How interesting.

17 year old Nigerian weightlifter Chika Amalaha made Nigeria proud as the first athlete to win gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, UK.

Unfortunately, she tested positive to drugs and was stripped of her win.

The Treasurer of Nigeria Weightlifting Coaches Association Andrew Ekanem, claims young Amalaha was stripped of her gold medal after failing a drug test because of consistently drinking Zobo PM News reports.

He made the statement in an interview with Brila FM,
“It was unfortunate that Amalaha was stripped of the medal she won at the Commonwealth Games, I could recall that after she was warned against drinking Zobo after the African Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana last May where she won three gold medals, when we returned to Abuja for camping ahead of the Commonwealth Games, she still sneaked out to drink  Zobo again.”

I believe this because all this traditional energy drink can be considered performance enhancement drug in the sports world. sadly that is what happen to her.

With or without the “ZOBO” I still believe she would have won the gold medal.

That is very unfortunate. I know while i ran for my university i was told about random doping test can be done on athletes no matter were they are and no matter the time of the day. So I was always cautious of what i ate and drank. For instance the poppy seeds on burger buns can test you “POSITIVE”, its that crazy!…………..

Very interesting. If she had been warned against drinking the zobo, was she also educated on the implication(s) of not heeding to this? Or she knew and was just being indisciplined and yet she was taken to the games? Then again, was it the zobo consumption that made her sample to be found to contain not only prohibited diuretic substances but also masking agents? We have very talented Nigerians but we need to be true to ourselves and put our house in order.

Zobo is a diuretics meaning it was taken to mask a banned drug. This coach is looking at jail time that is why his blaming it on her. I don’t think there is a teenager you will sit down and tell them the implication of sneaking out to drink Zobo that they will knowingly go and do it. Biko is there a place in glasgow where they sell Zobo ,(I know you can get it in packamp or east street in london) did she sneak it in to glasgow if yes why was she not searched. Please this coach isn’t telling us the truth they gave is to her and tried to hide it with a diuretics simple

hian…some people do have problems recalling what they read. how does ‘ when we returned to Abuja for
camping ahead of the Commonwealth Games, she
still sneaked out to drink Zobo again.” mean she took it in Glasgow?

Is this coach okay or needs a knock on the head to shut his lies… He is responsible for giving her drugs and he knows it now he is trying to pin it on her and zobo? Shame on him, Someone slap some sense into him.

Have they tested the Zobo for possible performance enhancing effects? In light of this let me do my good citizen duty PSA to all drug mules or would be mules there is something called a swab test that will show on your skin and sweat in case you swallowed pellets you have been warned.

  13. cos I say so

    August 7, 2014 at 10:34 pm

I understand how cough syrup can be considered performance enhancing(benylin&codeine anyone?)
But zobo? She sneaked out to drink Zobo in Glasgow?
Somebody …please …bring …that …coach …down to earth before he says something even more embarrassing out of desperation

Please there is nothing ignorant about his response. When ordinary cough syrup can spiike up levels that can be picked up in a test, I think its possible zobo could too. But this his statement shaa. People hear doping test and think its all about drugs, and its not. Even the most harmless foods can increase levels

    August 8, 2014 at 12:19 pm

The coach needs to STFU. She was caught , so let her face the music. Liar, liar pants on fire. Its like not turning in your homework and lying that the dog ate my book. “Eyes rolling with a long hiss”.

  32. What?

    August 8, 2014 at 12:23 pm

  33. birdieblue

    August 12, 2014 at 1:28 pm

First of all since when is someone addicted to zobo of all drinks, talk less of loosing a gold medal because of it?! Or is “zobo” now the slang for something else? As lala pointed out, stop blaming the dog!
