Would You Sue Your Child’s Father for Changing Her Natural Hair? Halle Berry Is!

Halle Berry & Gabriel Aubry - June 2014 - 01

It looks like Halle Berry and her ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry have moved on from fighting about child support to the state of their 6-year-old Nahla‘s hair!

The actress is fighting back for her daughter’s right to wear her hair natural and has taken Gabriel to court to have the issue judged. This is reportedly following an incident where Gabriel straightened and highlighted Nahla’s naturally curly hair, with Halle’s claims stating that he is trying to make her look “white“.

TMZ reports that Halle believes Gabriel doesn’t want his daughter looking African-American. The court has reportedly commented that neither parent has the right to dictate or change their daughter’s hair from its natural state without that child’s permission.

We are guessing if Nahla has had her hair curly for this long, chances are she is going to want to leave it that way.

So what do you think? Would you fight against your spouse’s or ex-spouse’s decision to change your child’s appearance if you were not comfortable with it? Share your thoughts.

everybody is going to say yes. this is a question for inter racial couples, not for mono racial couples

halle berry is too messy. this is not the first time she is trying to destroy this her ex. she dated this guy just for his good genes and his sperm to father her kid. helle berry let it go.

I heard she is already having problems with her new husband.

this is the curse of winning a best actress in a lead role oscar. look at sandra bullock, divorced hilay swank divorced gweneth paltrow divorced resse winterspoon divorced, immediately they win an oscar they get a divorce.

Bruno, I hope you know Sandra Bullock’s husband cheated on her? Don’t know what you’re saying cause that was public news.

I think you are not making much of a point, this is still a real issue in most parts, the whole race thing so you might not understand where she is coming from. So saying she is just doing this to spite her ex, is a bit low…anyway what’s winning an Oscar have to do with anything?

Are you aware that she pays him $16,000 for child support every month?

Yeah, that’s one of her dirty moves which ended up backfiring. Saying Gaby shouldn’t get custody because he couldn’t provide so the courts increased his allowance to he could. OUCH.

so u people believe halle berry and her claims. she is doing everything possible stop visitation and child support from her ex. and yes I know she pays 16, 000 dollar per months and she filed a report to reduce the money,

we all know her ex is spending some of the money on himself but shes the star.

wendy williams said it best if u want to play like a man u got to be ready to pay like a man

there are many women who collect child support money from men and spend some of it on themselves so why shouldn’t a man do the same. double standard

she isnt trying to defend her child, she is trying to get back at her ex, her new husband and her ex got into a fight some months ago and her new husband beat hell out of her ex who is a model for a living, go and google and see his face. halle berry is very messy.

Bruno , just because you are gay doesn’t mean you should lose a proper sense of judgement where men are involved . Its hard enough to be a woman , fending for an ex is annoying and he still thinks he is boss . I will not be as civil as Halle , if i have boys beat him up and he lands in the gutter , he would not lift a finger against me.

@aw, pls kindly keep shut,u are extremely foolish and I hope ur husband beats you thoroughly for ur poor don’t know the story, u just open ur mouth and talk shit, Pls never ever in ur life reply any of my comments again.

women collect heavy child support money from rich men and nobody complains but when a man is collecting heavy child support money from a rich woman everybody starts saying shit. Double standard.

Halle berry is fighting the father of her child which is wrong, always filling complaints 24/7 assuming her ex is treating their child badly that’s another thing, but he’s not,

I felt sorry for him when I saw pictures of his beaten face, halle berry’s new husband beat the hell out of his pretty face, and he’s a model, his selling point is his face. the two men got into a misunderstanding outside the house and they started fighting each other,

Seriously, go to court to discuss a child’s hair texture?!

This is something they should be able to resolve by themselves. Next exes will be in court discussing whether their child should wear a green or red pant.

Who are the lawyers who file these suits anyway? They should be beaten. Lol

Well, I think it applies to any couple who is separated. First of all, this man was her boyfriend not her fiancé or spouse and we all know Halle Berry has had her issues but lets call a spade a spade. A woman has a 6 year old daughter who has natural hair who goes to spend the weekend with her father, then comes back home with her hair relaxed or straightened…..which mother wouldn’t flip out? I don’t know about suing him in Nigeria but it can definitely be done in America.

This man is taking $16 thousand dollars or so from Halle Berry every month because they had a child together and he doesn’t even have full custody of the girl o, they are sharing custody. That’s over N2 million naira, every month. What child needs that kind of money for maintenance every month. It is obvious that the man is using the money on himself too, so bros, if I am maintaining your lifestyle, you better leave my child’s hair the way I want it. That’s the least you can do since you don’t want to get off your behind and get a job. That’s my opinion.

Spouse, bf, fiancé, husband – irrelevant, he’s Nahla’s father & deemed so by the law regardless of the parent’s marital status. No such thing as an illegitimate child in any sane legal jurisdiction.
It is Halle’s fault she’s paying him $16k, the bitter hag tried to get full custody on the basis that Gabby couldn’t provide the kind of life Nahla was accustomed to, dad lived in an unsafe neighbourhood (given her fame & status), his place wasn’t suitable, etc. so the courts upped his maintenance allowance so he could afford the lifestyle their daughter was accustomed to. Californian family law works to prevent the richer parent from using their wealth gain to advantage in custody matters. Child maintenance payments are such that the child must enjoy the same standard of living with either parent. This sees the richer parent i.e Halle having to fund Gabby’s ifestyle to a level that is deemed equally appropriate so the child feels no difference in comfort living with either in a 50/50 custody.
On the hair issue – she’s coming across as very pedantic, hair does lighten in the summer months, even mine does esp if you enjoy a beach lifestyle or swim a lot –chlorine/saltwater + sun naturally bleach the hair but it fades away after some time. He obviously isn’t using relaxer on her hair, more likely just over blow drying the hair after swim/shower on high heat & given the texture it would easily straighten her hair. I mean what would he know about good hair care?

She didn’t have to sue him to court, it is something they would have solved amicably between themselves

Bella Naija runs a series of articles encouraging black women to love their natural hair but thinks it right to mock a black woman trying to protect her mixed raced daughter’s identity? Why ask us if we would sue our child’s father for changing her natural hair? The suggestion implicit in such a question is unreasonableness.

Halle Berry is a mother trying to protect her child in a world that defines “beauty” in anti-Black ways used to justify misogynoir ( Anti-Black misogyn) and ridicule black women. Black women are the ONLY women in the world who are made to feel ashamed of the natural texture of their hair at an individual emotional and systematic level.

It is important to imbibe children with feelings of pride about their appearance and ethnicity from a young age. By altering Nahla’s hair, Gabe is perpetuating eurocentric ideals of hair and beauty on a biracial child which is reprehensible. She’s six years old! She has plenty of time to alter her hair if she chooses to when she grows up.

I’m so fed up of hearing people describe Halle Berry as problematic because she has a difficult relationship with an ex. She is no longer with Gabe and clearly their relationship has broken down irretrievably. She is not the first person to experience this senario and none of us know either party personally. It clearly states that she had resorted to asking him to stop altering Nahla’s hair before the issue was taken to court.

I prefer to give people I don’t know the benefit of doubt. Elizabeth Taylor was married eight times and I’m yet to ever encounter anyone describe her as messy or someone with issues. Painting Halle Berry as an angry ex is the classic misogynoir and reinforcement of stereotypes of being “angry” which limits the voices of black women being heard. Like any mother who loves her child, Halle Berry takes her parenting seriously and for that, she should be lauded.

Changing her physical appearance is an attempt to strip her of her identity. That is not his right. When she is old enough, she will change what she sees fit. It is disturbing. He had a child with a woman of color, what did he expect? Do not send the message that her hair is not good enough as is. Poor Halle…we all make mistakes

    • C'est moi

      November 26, 2014 at 5:36 pm

That is just Halle’s interpretation of blindly innocent events. Because she says so doesn’t mean that was his intention! I mean he did know after all he was going to have a mixed kid, Nahla wasn’t a surprise baby, she was planned for. A more reasonable explanation is that he’s using his products on her hair (shampoos/conditioners for blonds). Such products have lightening effects in that they work to maintain and enhance the colour & contain lemon a lightening agent. Plus drying her hair on high heat which will straighten it.
But now if i’m mad angry that my ex has stopped me from taking my daughter to France, I would so spin it that he is trying to deny her of her black heritage….

Something tells me Halle Berry is just a trouble maker. Is her own hair not straightened? Is she trying to look white? She is herself biracial, had a child with a Caucasian, and now complains he doesn’t want her to look African-American. No Halle, I think YOU didn’t want her to come out looking African-American. The man probably just saw what other black women were doing with their daughters’ hair, and followed suit.

But wait…her father is white. So the baby is half-white. What is wrong in her father and/or the child claiming the other half. I do agree that calling Halle messy is truly disgusting and it feeds into racial stereotypes.

Actually Nahla is 3/4 white as Halle is mixed race. Something Halle seems to forget cos she believes in that one drop rule.

This is just one more attempt to reduce the CHSUP (that is the code in the system for Child Support). So she will use any tool in the box. I don’t remember her being very black. Whenever did dshe really let her curly hair reign?

I don’t understand why whites have children with blacks if they don’t want their children to have Afro hair. If you don’t want coiled / kinky hair on your children then just date within your own white race. Some white people who date blacks really suffer from cognitive dissonance.
