US President Barack Obama on Wednesday said he has given a directive that 300 troops should be deployed to Cameroon to work with West African soldiers in efforts to fight Boko Haram.
New York Times reports that the announcement was made via a letter to congress, and confirms that troops will provide “intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance” in the region.
Also, White House press secretary, Josh Earnest, said that the troops would be armed for their protection but that they would not engage in combat.
The report further states that an advance force of about 90 military personnel had begun deploying to Cameroon.
