Adebayo Oke-Lawal of Orange Culture presents ‘The Heartbroken Collection’
Posted on Thursday, June 2nd, 2011 at 8:53 AMBy Ijeoma Ndekwu
Orange Culture is a new label by young Creative Director and Stylist Adebayo Oke-Lawal .
Adebayo on the collection: ‘Heartbreak is never the end but the beginning of something new, something better, ‘Black,White and Red’ love always heals’. This is the first collection from my label, It’s a very sentimental collection, as each piece speaks of a period in my life (for example the story telling pieces, which have words written on them, the most vivid definition of what I mean by each piece being something personal).
The collection was inspired by different heartbreak stories, how it seems at first like life would never go on (black), white (a fresh start) and the red (the only actual healing is to love again).
The collection was built to help those who feel like they would never love again, I wanted them to feel and to know that well it could only get better from here. Thus why the Ready-to-Wear/minimalist focused collection is called ”the heartbroken”, it is a very relatable collection as I’m sure everyone has been through something of the sort or knows someone who has. The pieces are simple but unique.
Orange culture partnered with Shem Paronelli to create the Animal skin bags for the collection.
I had a brief chat with Adebayo about the collection. He spoke so passionately about it and said ‘it was very much from the heart’. He described the most emotional piece in the collection as the white dresses with written words which share his experiences, memorable places, past loves, family and friends. He remarks that his favourite pieces in the collection are the black floor-length dresses, which he says ‘ they exuded what I wanted them to- they were reflective of the depth of the heartbreak‘ as they reveal the intensity and hurt.
It was a well-thought out collection, and I look forward to witnessing this young brand grow and flourish!

THE BLACK DRESS WITH THE LACE IS REALLY NICE.
EVERY OTHER PIECE IS JUST THERE IMO
yeah, so like him………cool.
Awesome! All awesome!!
Sorry o, but the guys are better models ooooo, they tell a believeable story, body movements, posture and alll, me i so loooooooooove jare
i agree.
Ok some pieces are really great and some are down right atrocious.

http://www.yomzie.wordpress.com
i love the everything in different shade of red, i also really really like the monostrap black with 3 braided sleeve. thumbs up bayo.
guys with harem pants and sandals what were u thinking bayo lawal
i like
Where is his boutique located.
?
Most of the designs are heartbreaking but i loved the effect of the cloudy sky.
Hmm, the girls look okay but if my man were to wear any of these, i would worry.
I was thinking the same thing – Any man that dresses like this should be given a wide berth in the ‘Big Boys Room’. Men can be stylish without looking like they are desperate to be geldings or cross-dressers; if you are jealous of your girl-friend’s bag or corset – what are you doing with a girl-friend?
its like stuff out of the runway, you’re not supposed to copy all the pieces and wear them like that. you can compose different pieces and make your own ensemble.
I would too. I mean, I’m all for metros…clean up nice, well fitted clothes, and other metro-esque orisirisi. But when his purse is bigger than mine, his pants are tighter and shinier than mine, and his body is contorted into questionable positions, I would definitely worry that he’s with the wrong gender by being with me.
Impressive!
kmt!!! obviously the guys v been watching too much ANTM, wat with d over-the-top poses.
not impressed by the model, the clothing and the set (backdrop)
wld v expected more from him, mr metro.
the murse/man purse is a no-no, worse still when they come in pastel shades :s
I guess I know nothing about fashion…I like my men in regular clothes and I dont do androgynous..let the lads be lads and the lasses, lasses!! KMT
And the church said….Amen!
exactly!!! he should leave it for Andrej Pejic i beg, which one is man purse and kembe pants
i dont like cept a few of the female clothes……
its not working for me either….
OSHISKO……..
ok, 4/10 for the time invested… Fabrics… he should explain what was behind the usage… Creativity 7/10.. he can always improve, Styling 4/10… uhmm, need a lot more work. and the male models need not pout at all.. they are guys!!! and pls!! make sure your models have nice feet should they be wearing sandals. overall Good work!!! cos i know the time and effort one has to put into a collection
All I see is MANPURSE
Seriously, what’s with the awkward poses? Nigerian models need to try to be a bit more graceful with thier poses. I couldn’t even enjoy the clothes, cos the models messed it up…
Yaaaawn! Trying way too hard.
the guys did a great job modeling this collection
i guess theyre trying to look sensual in the poses…..is that how ur oyinbo counterparts pose in their photos?,i mean im not trying to put our naija models down but pls help me analyse these poses biko……
love the bag n purses….unique designs just like his style!
i’m sorry but its not werking for me!!!
i think this is what happens when you try too much..or try so much to be different….you end up looking odd rather than unique. all i can do is pray for this lad so he really knows where his talents lie….not to sound like a ‘”hater’”…MORE POWER TO YOUR ELBOW
love the ankara espadrills…where can i get it??is it made in nigeria?
bayo is not a designer…….pls stick to ur styling……………..these things r just speaking over done…
This fellow should simply stay away from the male fashion industry! Some of the female pieces are acceptable but all the supposed male pieces are out sad!
Almost feels as if you’re experimenting with your sexuality rather than serving the public’s perception of men’s clothing. Lastly, like most others have said… ‘overdone!’
You need to sit down, relax, and begin planning a new collection way ahead of time, coz this, simply said is crap!
bayo… its ok to express ur creativity or ur definition of fashion anywayz u choose – i think ur style is highly creative but pleeeease, alongside this display of eccentric and fun creativity, it might help if u showcase these pieces in colours and combo’s that are actually wearable ….. they might not scare us so much and could actually be appealing! for me, i’d say kudos!
I am a big fan of androgyny so its a big thumbsup. Very avantgarde in a vava-voom-ish way. Loving the sandals and the murse would perfectly fit in my netbook. You rock
When you spend more time trying to decipher the sex of the models than actually appreciating the clothes, then something has gone wrong. Firstly, this idea that these clothes are creative or edgy is just silly. These things are all over asos and Topman, however I wouldn’t rubbish his designs because it takes a lot of work to do a collection.
This fella needs to understand 2 things; 1) He needs to understand his target market; Naija men like classic style not harem pants and shiny fabrics. 2) When one cannot afford quality fabrics then the best thing to do is to keep the designs simple. All this “busyness” is just not working rara.
the girls look gud…the guys look really really silly
Peperempe, I disagree. I think he has developed a style and is sticking to it. I love this collection and androgyny is a world wide trend anyway. You dont like it….yes, but dont sit on a high horse and say what u aint sure of……..TOTALLY LOVING THE CONCEPT
I really don’t do horses to be honest so your comment is not fair. To summarize, I wouldn’t be buying many of the menswear looks shown here, and going by the comments so far, neither will the majority of people. Look I totally get what he was trying to do but I think the overall effect was just effete overkill!
Seeing as the clothes were already androgynous, he should have kept the styling and the modeling masculine. The contrast might have been more appealing than this situation. The job of a designer isn’t just to bring his vision to life, it’s also to sell that vision to the public and boy oh boy the public ain’t buying this.
its his inspiration peoples….not everyfng you see on d runway@top notch fashion weeks or fash mag are wearable, alot of them are editorial…..he tryd doing that even tho d pieces are so so him but thats why its called a designers inspiration….me likey
The fact that Mens fashion now seems to be about embracing the “little girl” inside of them is scary as hell. I mean whats up with the clutch purses, harem pants etc? The just look gay (the guys I mean) and yes I said GAY. Na wa oh
wake up sis!…we are in yr 2011…boring is no longer accepted!…
There’s nothing ‘Heartbroken’ about the designs. Most of the female outfits are actually nice but ewwwwwwwww @ the male outfits!
i love the pieces, presentation sucks tho..great pics bad posing and styling
i dont understand the pose of the male model o..lmao..wetin be dat??!!
ooo…I think d ALL d male stuff were FLAWLESS…he is showing dt male stuff can be colourful and fun in a mature classy manner….the female dresses were also good…THE STYLING ESPECIALLY 4 D GUYS…I’m just speechless e was really good…i’m not disappointed @all, d only look i didnt like was d one where d model wore a singlet and some red stuff, apart from that…great job Bayo!…I think d ppl who dont like d black guy or d male collection are really stale and still live in d age where male fashion was big, black or white or othr dark colours…cos the male looks sell d collection, d black model did 2.
whats it with the men carrying purse abi na clutch bags and the faces of some of the girls i just dont get this collection
Wanimi where have u been? androgyny has been seen on runways since last two seasons and its come to stay. Nothing gay about it…..gee!…………Peperempe,i think he is just developing his signature, and he may still have some loyal followers. I for one would buy the man purse, perfect for my netbooks. Besides as hideous as Alexander McQueen’s (RIP) collection used to be, he had a cult following of celebrities….so go figure
those men out shined the women the poses awesome i bet they watch alot of antm,
u knw. im reallly in love with it and it goes with the theme of the style plus d backgrounds are reallllll and so Nigerian but the photos still come out well. they lovely
love love love the lace dress i’d love to shoot that
sometimes its important most of this people understand you must not play it gay to look fly…some good colour combinations and thats it
