Beauties from the Motherland: The African Queens of Miss Universe 2009

Its that time again, the Miss Universe competition is back! This year, it is being held in beautiful Bahamas and as has become a tradition on Bella Naija, we are showcasing the African Queens who are representing the motherland at the pageant.
These days, there are polarizing views on beauty pageants – feminists argue that it is sexist, others say that it is an outdated concept while others absolutely love it and can’t wait for the next pageant to crop up!

Anyway, lets focus on these ladies. I’m proud of the crop of African representatives – they all look beautiful! Nigeria is represented by MBGN Universe 2009 – Sandra Otohwo. You can visit her Miss Universe page HERE

Its a shame that none of them are from Gambia or Senegal, they have got loads of beauties from those two countries.

    August 10, 2009 at 11:19 pm

Miss Nigeria had one of the worst pictures. everyone else had body shots and she had a far way shot sitting in the sand. 🙁
miss angola looks so much better here than in her interview.
and i dont even know why we include egypt because most of them dont even consider themselves african.
the best girl over all, Miss Ghana, kinda like a sports illustrated cover. lol

Miss nigeria’s picture is not flattering at all…all d other girls had full frontal shots..and she come dey frown face again…Miss Zambia is so pwetty!!Miss Nambia gosh i love her ebony skin

    August 10, 2009 at 11:45 pm

its not that there are no beauties in gambia or senegal but those countries choose not to compete. and i would understand why.
those are muslim countries so of course you wont expect to see them competing in something like this.
every african country has loads of beauties, just that some countries choose not to compete. i guess its forbidden.

I know some consider themselves middle east i went to school with some of them!!well maybe this one considers herself African

    August 11, 2009 at 12:17 am

    we dont know that.
every year bella just adds egypt because geographically its african. but most of them in spirit are middle easterns and want NOTHING to do with africa.

Hey guys the girl from Nigeria, can sing, check out her message on the weblink bella posted. She has some stiff competition but we should try and support.Imagine living with and being compared to 90 other very pretty girls.Show naija some love.log in and vote.

    August 11, 2009 at 4:16 am

All of the ladies are beautiful and i wish them luck but the Egyptian kinda threw me off. I hope she won’t be offended by being pictured amongst these girls because like Amaka said many of these people don’t consider themselves Africans.

Alot of people from the northern african states and arabs consider themselve part of the middle east even though they are on the african continent. Bella added the the egyptian girl, but no middle eastern country nor north african country would let a black person represent anything in their countries.

    Good Luck Ladies!

Physical appearance-wise and compared with others on this list, the Nigerian girl is not beautiful. But patroitism rules and she has my wholesome support even against the most beautiful girl from … let me see the photos again.

    August 11, 2009 at 11:33 pm

The Egyptian girl should not be featured with the African queens. She is arab and thus not a real Egyptian if we think about it since original Egyptians were Black. arabs are immigrants from asia and I will always consider them as such.

  27. kemchi

    August 12, 2009 at 12:17 am

Well no need to split hairs now, Egypt is part of Africa and whether we like it or not so are her citizens whatever complexion or origin they may be, and ditto for other north Africans and S.A.
Just like there are Caucasian-Americans and African- Americans the fact remains that they’re all Americans!

    August 12, 2009 at 1:13 am

Geographically they are IN Africa…but their ways are mostly middle eastern i know a bunch of them (even some dark skinned ones) and they always refer to the middle east all the time…I am in a class with one of them and anytime the whole African issue (media Portrayal) comes up her comments/opinions does not sound like that of an African…she doesnt call her self African (she is dark skinned) ….and i aint mad at her…she can identify with whomever she chooses to..i dont know the history and why she feels more middle eastern…to each his cant really force a group of pple who do not want to identify with Africa to be Africans…

i dont think u cant really compare the situation to that of Caucasian Americans and African Americans

  30. Yemi

    August 12, 2009 at 1:16 am

    No seriously silverbird!!!warrahell!
ah ahn!this is a beauty pageant now.
they did us strong thing with the girl representing us..
    she is an okay girl…but….
that picture has further jeopardized her…
    really can we change her-lol

  31. Yeah-I-Said-It

    August 12, 2009 at 2:38 am

none of these heifas represent true african beauties to me. yes they are beautiful but an average african girl doesnt look like them. All curlyhair and lightskin nonsense. I guess light is best huh. All that colonialism mentallity bullshyt.

  32. Tallchica

    August 12, 2009 at 3:05 am

I like miss zambia the best…Nigeria was pretty in a stronger way and exuded more strength, but I think miss zamibia was differnt in the fact that she went with a wild looking head of hair and made it work for her. But when push comes to shove, I remain patriotic. Naija all the way!!

    August 12, 2009 at 8:50 am

i thought all egyptians looked like this girl or like people that were a quarter mixed with black.
i didnt even know that egyptians had dark skinned people.
(i dont mean to sound ignorant) but what i see and hear and the Miss Egypt every year all look middle easter/arab.
i dont think ive ever seen a dark skinned egyptian that looks black. most look arab.
i guess that country suffers heavily from inferiority complex too because every year the girl looks white.
when is it going to be more diverse?

  34. Xos

    August 12, 2009 at 10:13 am

‘kemchi’ You’re right Egypt is a part of Africa and they are citizens but it’s not whether or not we like it, it’s more so whether or not they like it. These people do not consider themselves African AT ALL, they consider themselves as a part of the middle east.
Even some major publications and media outlets don’t even see Egypt as part of africa. I read an article on Obama and the article stated all of the countries he went to and the article included Egypt as one of the Middle Eastern countries he visited. When I read it I was like Huh?? Yes an American is an American no matter what they look like but the difference with Egyptians and other N. African people is that americans consider themselves american but the people of N. Africa do not consider themselves Africans.

  35. geekgirl

    August 12, 2009 at 1:09 pm

no need to call them heifas..just as there are dark skinned Africans there are light skinned one…as in there are light skinned Africans just like that (not even by mixed blood)…so they should pass a law that only DARK SKINNED Africans should apply abi?…and btw, the only light skinned folks i can see are miss SA & Egypt…na wa ..i wonder how light skinned Africans feel when they see comments like this..So all Africans by default must be dark and have natural hair abi?

  36. Sugabelly

    August 12, 2009 at 7:16 pm

There are completely black Egyptians but most of them are relegated to the poorer strata of society. The problem with North Africa is that since it was overrun by the Arabs a couple of centuries ago it’s become an area of Africa where black Africans are treated like dirt while those with Arab features are allowed to get ahead.

Plus there’s the fact that most North Africans don’t consider themselves African and talk about Africa as if their countries are not on it and as if it is this disgusting place.

Some aren’t like this of course, but a lot are.

  37. Sugabelly

    August 12, 2009 at 7:19 pm

“a Wild looking head of hair”???????

are you serious? Does it occur to you that Miss Zambia’s hair is EXACTLY what YOUR hair would look like if you stopped relaxing it?

I’m not here to attack people that have relaxed hair or anything but it’s amazing when people make such stupid comments.

How can you, an African, say that Miss Zambia’s hair is ‘wild’ when that is the hair that has been biologically ordained to grow out of your head???

It just shows how pervasive brainwashing can be.

  38. policeisyourfriend

    August 13, 2009 at 4:08 am

@ Tall chica…kai!!na wa because she doesnt have straight hair/weave the one on her head is WILD?

@ Sugarbelly when i had natural it didnt look like that o….
neither did my sisters or cousins or classmates…
the only ones i knew that had hair like Ms Zambia were biracial girls…Ms Zambia’s hair looks like it has been treated to look like that…or she has Caucasian blood in her that is making the hair look curly while in dont go around thinking Tall chica’s hair and every other African would look EXACTLY like that…

btw- i am thinking of going natural once i get rid of this weave on my head..God help me…I will start researching online on how to go about it.

    August 13, 2009 at 4:02 pm

i understand what she’s saying because every year you dont really see dark chocolate contestants.
    or dark skinned ones.
its mostly light skinned and brown skinned girls.
look at 2007 miss universe contestants from africa. it was the worst. there were probably only 3 dark skinned girls out of about 10, one of them being white from south africa.
the other girls were light or mixed or whatever they were.
so i understand what she means when its always a light or a brown skinned crowned the most beautiful girl.
some countries have issues i guess.
flaviana matata is still one of the best. natural and all. 🙂

i am african american and i have been to egypt, you are right there are millions of darkskinned people that lives in egypt, especially in upper egypt in the south in the areas of aswan, edfu, esna and luxor. as far as discrimination base on skin color, yes it exist but it is hidden, however there are many black ethnicity the live in upper egypt ababda, bisharin, some siwa, some of the saidee, and of course the nubians. according to population censenus upper egypt is about 10 or 20 million people out of 80 million.

Oh by the way, the girls look smoking HOT! Egyptians sabi o. I work with one that thinks she’s white. The Ethiopians? Hmm…. they think they are better than all other African countries because the Caucasians (White Americans) always tell them they look different and are better looking than other Africans. I am not lieing. I’ve seen the way they behave and you just feel like smacking them. But when it comes to brains and being smart? Zero!

I was a photographer during the finals in The Bahamas. All the African women were beautiful. My favourite was Ms. Ethiopia, Melat Yante. She was hard to find most of the time.

That said I would spend days with any of these hotties with very little persuasion. Thanks for the great post.
