Wande Coal on BellaNaija - November 2013 - BellaNaija002

There’s no beef between Wande Coal and Don Jazzy.

At least that’s what Wande Coal is saying. The Nigerian music star is in London for the GTBank CTcrea8 free concert to be held at indigo2 today Friday 15th November 2013.

He spoke to Adesope Olajide of Factory78 for the Vox Africa live special promoting the concert.

He was asked about the much publicised beef between him and superstar producer Don Jazzy which started because of copyright issues surrounding the song “Baby Face“. (click here to read)

He said;

“Everybody knows that i’m black diamond and it’s something I always wanted to do, so I decided to create my own label. The song was supposed to be on my album but since we fell out it was just void so it’s not like it went against any contractual agreement.
But there’s no animosity. I’ve still got love for Don Jazzy.”

Wande is not signed to D’banj‘s DB Records. He also said he is interested in signing Yvonne Nelson to his label.

God bless you… How does not having a contract with Mavin justify the fact that you used a song that you didn’t write/ do not own?
If i were Don Jazzy, I’ll sue his ass for everything he is worth!
Don Jazzy and Co, you need to legally bind every business you do. You are not illiterates for God’s sake!

    Contract talk again??
I hope these guys/gals will learn a lesson.
you can’t do serious business with no written and legal binding arrangement.

clearly Mr Coal doesn’t understand the concept of fiduciary
obligations and how they arise.. no contract? no contract at all?
none? ooh that cant be right, not in this day and age. my man needs
to invest in quality legal advice, and a legal team..

Same advice goes to Jazzy. As big as he is purported to be
I struggle to understand how the concept of legally binding
agreements are alien to him. When folks are even signing contracts
of some sort with their nannies and house helps.

Is that an excuse to use his work & release a song
word for word? BTW, are you sure you had no contract with Mavin?
Did you get paid for performances? Were you getting fees? On what
basis where you being paid these……..

This just shows that alot of Nigerian artistes are
oblivious of the act of professionalism. His reply to plagiarising
Don Jazzy’s song is just sheer idiotic. Anyway, I don’t blame him.
If there was no contract signed in the first place, then Don Jazzy
opened the avenue for him to ‘steal’ or plagiarise his work. How
can a big guy like Don Jazzy not have a signed contract with his
protégés? It’s totally absurd. This is what happens when
professionalism is swept under the carpet and nepotism is allowed
to reign. As a music exec, no matter how close or friendly his boys
may be – Wande coal et al, he should have drawn up a contract and
made all of them sign. I hope he doesn’t have any problem with Tiwa
Savage or Dr. Sid cos it seems he doesn’t know how to manage his
artistes without ending in a misunderstanding…… NO EXCUSE FOR
    IGNORANCE.

I honestly think that this is telling of what is taking place in the music industry in Nigeria. Lack of infrastructure causes room to loosely abide by contracts as well as not honor them. Wande Coal was placed in the back burner with the launch of Mavin and is just doing what is best for his career.
