Court Grants Ex Imo Governor Ohakim N270 Million Bail for N270 Million Fraud

Ikedi Ohakim

Last month, it was reported that former Imo State governor, Ikedi Ohakim, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over an alleged N270 million fraud.

And now, Punch is reporting that a Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday granted Ohakim, bail in the sum of N270 million.

Ohakim is expected to produce a surety resident in Abuja to guarantee the bail.

According to the report:

Justice Adeniyi Ademola, in his ruling on the bail application, filed by Ohakim, also ordered the prosecuting agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, ‎to submit the passport and other travel documents seized from the former governor to the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court.

The judge was silent on where the accused person should remain pending when he would meet the bail conditions.

At the hearing of the bail application on Thursday, the defence counsel, Chris Uche (SAN), urged the court to grant his client’s prayer.

He said his client, whose passport had been seized by the EFCC, had remained faithful to the bail conditions granted him by the anti-graft agency.

But the prosecutor, Mr. Festus Keyamo, opposed the bail.

He argued that rather than granting bail to the accused person‎, the court should grant an accelerated hearing.

But the judge in his ruling held that the accused person had placed sufficient materials before the court to warrant granting him bail.

The EFCC had on Wednesday arraigned Ohakim on three counts of fraud, including making cash payment of $2.29m (N270m) for a property in Asokoro, Abuja.

The prosecution also accused the former governor of collaborating with Tweenex Consociates H.D. Ltd. ‎to conceal the ownership of the property by drafting an agreement portraying him as a tenant in the property.

Ohakim, who was governor of Imo State between May 2007 and May 2001, was also accused of failing to declare the property as part of his assets while under EFCC arrest in November 2008.

The offences were allegedly committed in 2008 in violation of section 15(1)(d) and section 14(1)(b) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2004, respectively.

Ohakim is father of Adanna Steinacker, one half of popular married couple/social media sensation #AdannaDavid.

Two questions for you and I’m genuinely curious. Are you sure she took his last name and secondly was it really necessary to mention that. We all know he is a former governor.

In good or bad times……..the name sticks. She cannot be his daughter only in good merry times. If this was about Ohakim being made say a UN Ambassador for Human Rights, Bella would have done the same. That is the price of being popular on social media. If Adanna was an unknown person or not a popular personality on social media, Bella would not even need to draw the association for readers.

I wonder if Adanna and her oyinbo husband are still dancing Shoki…. its sad that in naija, a man that steals a phone, will probably get beaten, paraded around town and burnt alive, but this kind of egoistic imbecile, steals millions, but is allowed to walk around freely, send his children overseas, and would probably get elected to the senate in future. Shine your eyes naijas. gov’t money is you own money too. Everyone does it, or me too will wait for my turn is no longer sustainable, especially in times of economic downturn and with no basic infrastructures.

Word of advice to all those who admire & worship the ground ‘rich people’ walk on! Not all of them made their money the legal way! You can go ahead and embezzle or smuggle drugs but you should be warned, ONE DAY YOU WILL GET CAUGHT AND YOU WILL PAY THE PRICE! I’m so happy with the judge’s decision. I know Adanna, we both live in Dublin and she is a lovely young lady. It’s quite sad that he family is going through this just after her sister’s wedding but I’m happy justice is being SERVED!

“Ohakim is father of Adanna Steinacker, one half of popular married couple/social media sensation #AdannaDavid.”

Why exactly is this necessary or important in this news BN? Why oh why?

So we Nigerians can learn to stop celebrating children or other family members of thieves. Former Governors of Chicago and Louisiana in the US are all in jail for corruption and you will never dare see Americans blogs glorifying their children’s weddings or lavish lifestyles like we do here. In fact you do not hear about them at all. We should do the same here.

Oh she does live a lavish lifestyle on social media? I thought she was ‘famous’ for dancing on YouTube with her husband like a lot of famous YouTube couples. And that doesn’t really correlate with this…

But if she’s indeed all up in people’s faces and doing lavish lifestyle with her father’s money not her husband, then you have a point. She suppose join the man for prison ‘gan’ if found guilty ?

BN, I find it awkward that you praise and carry Adanna & Hubby + her twin on your head on this site but are so quick to shame her dad and share this news with us…something a bit two faced about it but I guess news is news :-/

Its called journalism, my dear! Nothing two faced about it.

There’s nothing two-faced about it. This news concerns them as he is their father so BN reports it. It would be hypocritical of them not to include it since they post everything else about the twins.

This isn’t shaming their Dad (he did this all by himself), he is a prominent figure who was caught engaging in acts of corruption. They report most EFCC cases.

Objective reporting my dear. Personally I don’t think certain weddings should get posted because of who the parents of the celebrants are. However, if they are going to do it, in the name of being unbiased it is good that they share ALL the news.

Bellanaija is not the same. I don’t blame you guys though. I know the struggle to be number 1 is real. I’m not saying this just because you posted this news, nope. Like someone else stated, it seems hypocritical of you guys to on one hand post this and then on the other hand go to instagram, save his children’s photos and carry it on top your head. I have more to say but you won’t post my comment if I say what I have in mind.

@Wonders. Yes, news is news and every news is worth reportage. By the way, are you implying that BN shouldn’t report this news because of the other happy news of adanna, hubby and siblings? Your hypocrisy is boundless! Obviously, you sympathise with them, but sorry sweetheart, I and I know many other well-meaning Nigerians will agree that if their dad is found guilty, justice should be served.

I dont see what Bella has done besides share information that is all over the news. Was Bella supposed to censor this and only publish news of the Ohakim family when they are displaying pomp and pageantry? I confuse plenty. Bella, welcome to the world of publishing the truth. Some will love you, some will chastise you. I am glad you could stand your ground on this one. You did not create the news. They did. All you did is report it, like you would their happy life and glamour wedding pictures and videos.

Nigerians can be useless at times

The last sentence of this article was pointless. It’s the father who has committed such crimes and not his daughter for crying out loud. To the author of this article, it’s as if you wanted to say “oh by the way, since her dad is a criminal she possibly could be one too”. That extra info (which I’m sure a handful of people already know) was a bit…EXTRA. Don’t you think? Ah, just my opinion.

See your brain. That’s the problem with Nigerians. Is his children not enjoying the stolen money and flaunting it in our faces? The twins were switching Mercedes yearly while attending Uni in the UK, wearing Celine, Hermes, Chanel bags and going on expensive trips before they were even close to getting married. Where do you think the money to do all this came ? Neither of them were working and they did not live this way before he was governor. They have been enjoying the money he stole so let them bare his shame as well.
