1000 Jobs can be Created per Week for Nigerians from Dressing Masquerades – Lai Mohammed

Lai MohammedNigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has said that dressing masquerades can create a thousand jobs in one week for Nigerians.

Speaking at the sectoral debate of the Federal House of Representatives in Abuja on Tuesday, Mohammed said that most states in Nigeria have one festival or the other which if packaged very well can provide employment for Nigerians.

Most states today have more than one festival a year, but the packaging and lack of capacity has not enabled them to make the most out of these festivals. There’s a particular masquerade in the south east, it takes 100 people to dress him, another 100 people to undress him. If this masquerade is well-packaged, it can provide employment in one week for more than 1000 young men. These are some of the untapped potentials.

He also said that Nigeria has the oldest forest in the world in terms of biodiversity for tourists to visit, but tourists are discouraged by bribery and insecurity in the country. He differentiated between a tourist site and a tourist attraction, stating that infrastructure is needed to turn a tourist site to a tourist attraction that can generate revenue for the government.

“I worked in the airport for 10 years, and I know that if you want your passport stamped as a foreigner, you slip $100 into your passport. No tourist would come back to a country where he has to bribe immigration to enter.

No tourist would come to a country where, when he leaves immigration, he enters a ‘one-chance’ taxi or ‘one-chance’ bus. It’s a holistic problem and these are all contained in the national tourism master plan, which I would make available to the house.

We must make a difference between tourist sites and tourist attractions; what we have in Nigeria are tourist sites. They are not tourist attractions. You need infrastructure to convert a tourist site to a tourist attraction. If you don’t have infrastructure, it would always remain a tourist site.

In Cross Rivers reserve park, Nigeria has the oldest forest in the whole world. It is the oldest in terms of biodiversity, and we have this very rare, white-mane gorilla in that area, but because my people in Cross River have decided to turn them to bush meat, they have now escaped.,” he said.

Lai Mohammed is a full blown clown.
Hope your children and relatives will be employed as the dressers.
Education ministry might soon introduce masquerade dressing craft in the curriculum and probably commence issuing certification in Ojuju Calabar dressing.
Hahahahahahahahahahahha employment of the century. What an innovation!

Ladies and gentlemen, look no further! Here we have it, with these type of people in key government positions Nigerians have their work cut out for them…
Nothing wrong with being a professional masquerader, but this is not a viable solution for unemployment in Nigeria! Very disturbing that this is coming from a FGN minister ??

Lai Mohammed is a bloody disappoiintment to all Yoruba people. This old fool has lost touch with reality. What a lousy thing to say. Are these the kind of people President Muhammadu Buhari been brainstorming with?, No wonder Nigeria is not moving forward. (stagnated.). Well, Minister of Cultural affairs, YOU ARE RETARDED..

just dont get it! He is trying to utilise the domestic potentials and you all are attacking him. He never said thatgraduates would be employed. l really dont see what is wrong with his observation. Dressing a Masqurade doesnt mean to wear d costume on the Masqurade, it could mean making the costume which is taught in Arts. lts quiet unfortunate that we so much see negativity than positivity

He should be able to convey that better if that’s what he meant. He is the Minister of Information and Culture …. we shouldn’t have to ponder and wonder at what he means.

This is just an stay of political office holders with uncouth speech mannerism and “verbal diarhoea”. His children should first dress and undress the masquerades. Mtcheeeeew!

    May 5, 2016 at 1:58 pm

You see the calibre of people that is changing Nigeria, you can see that Lai Mohammed and his group that occupy the seat of power are insensitive about the plight of nigerians. what he said as a minister of Information and Culture at the house of representative in a sectoral debate, “dressing masquerades can create a thousand job in one week for Nigerian”. That is how his children got job because they were dressing masquerades. APC is full of crass excuses, they don’t have anything to offer to nigerians, what they give to nigerians is hunger, unnecessary talk like Lai Mohammed is talking like a person with mental disorder. So in his Village, dressing of masquerades has been solving the problem of unemployment among the youths, is that what he meant? let him continue to give employment and pay them through masquerades dressing. That is his own initiative as APC man. If Lai Mohammed don’t have anything useful to say he better remain quiet.
