The New York Times on Nollywood – “A Scorsese in Lagos” & View the 2nd Trailer for Kunle Afolayan’s Film “Phone Swap”

Just a few hours after a review of D’banj’s New York concert, the New York Times has published another Nigerian entertainment industry focused article. This time, the focus is Nollywood. The article titled “A Scorsese in Lagos – The Making of Nigeria’s Film Industry” was written by NYT contributing writer, Andrew Rice.
The primary focus is Nigerian filmaker Kunle Afolayan who according to Andrew Rice, “…wants to scare you, he wants thrill you, he wants to make you laugh, but most of all, he would like you to suspend your disbelief — in his plots, yes, which tend to be over the top, but also about what is possible in Africa.”
It also explores the roots of the Nigerian home video industry and the current key players (the Alaba Cartel, the Actors Guild, Pirates, marketers and producers).

In other Kunle Afolayan news, the filmaker has released the 2nd official trailer for his new movie, “Phone Swap“.
In case you missed it,
Akin and Mary meet for the first time at an airport where they accidentally bump into each other and mistakenly swap their identical phones .
This leads to a destination mix up after they receive one another’s text regarding a travel destination.
Consequently, Akin ends up traveling to where Mary is supposed to go and vice versa.
Neither knows about the swap until they have reached their opposite destinations and “the phone” stops ringing (In Mary’s case) and “Won’t stop ringing” (In Akins’s case) .
As a result of the phone swap, they agree to help carry out each other’s missions, armed with the information and data on each other’s phone.
But it’s not as easy as they both think as new obstacles and complications rise at every turn as they both struggle to adapt to their alien environment and situation.
Mary has to walk in Akins shoes and represent him in a company meeting while Akin has to represent Mary in her the family meeting. This they do with hilarious results…

Can’t wait to watch the film, Nollywood is gradually moving forward in terms of movie content and cinematography, as for actors, we have always had good and talented ones. The problems have in my opinion always been with the terrible producers, script writers and movie editors.
It’s a good thing that a new breed are stepping up.
One thing that got me though in the first trailer, at point 0.58seconds, the fight in the village scene: This bares a very close resemblence
One thing that got me though in the first trailer, at point 0.58seconds, the fight in the village scene: This bares a very close resemblance to the fight scene in the film “Kungfu Husstle” in which there was a woman character called the landlady who shot a gun up in the air the exact way the lady at pt .59secs did, they even dressed in the same manner and the same camera zooming was used. I guess its ok to copy! I hope when I watch the film I won’t walk away feeling its a film full of disjointed parts from other films. Apart from that… we are moving forward

i’ve always anticipated kunle afolayan’s films but been dissapointed after watching..hope this one won’t be the same sha
i respect the likes of Kunle who have decided to raise the bar in africa movies – unlike the mediocre moviemakers and their baffoonery type of movies and titles they keep bombarding us with. I just wish Africa will get more great directors and film makers like Kunle, Izu Ojukwu, Leila Djansi, Shirley Frimpong Manso, Kwaw Ansah, Emem, Amata brothers, etc to weed out all the non quality movies for good. Kunle I salute you and i will 100% support and help promo your movie. Just please dont give the rights of your movies to be shown on some youtube channel or some free sites. I hope your premieres go well and you are able to sell enough DVDS to break even and make another great movie. I hate nonsense movies, I am all for great movies and this trailer looks very promising. We are on it with the promo and we wait patiently for March.

I have to say i am mightily impress, i would readily pay N3000 or whatever amount they pay to see a movie at home. Kunle Afolayan has definitely taken a good leaf from Tunde Kilani – Mainframe. Looking forward to a naija movie
