Genevieve Nnaji featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show

Gene OprahNigerian actress Genevieve Nnaji was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show in an episode ‘Meet the Most Famous People in the World‘. A montage of photos and a video clip (from the movie ‘Bursting Out’) featuring Genevieve was shown as her various career highlights were mentioned. Gene who was referred to as the “Julia Roberts of Africa” on the show was chosen due to her wide appeal across the African continent and all over the world. Other stars from around the world including Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan (India) and Lu Yu (China) were also featured on the show.
Congrats to Genevieve!
Bella Naija is also excited that we assisted the Oprah Winfrey Show in working on this piece.
It is great to see Nigeria and Africa being presented in a positive light. Just seeing one positive story about Nigeria/Nigerians actually plays a significant role in changing the perceptions that many hold.
One step at a time….

In nollywood some try so damn hard (force force yeye ones) and still cant seem to get IT, pioneers and great talent like Genny, she doesnt even have to try hard to be recognized. She is just blessed – Many are called few are chosen and Genevieve Nnaji is one of the very blessed and undeniable chosen stars of Africa. I am so happy and so proud of this utterly beautiful GLOBAL recognition. Thank you God.

Now what we have to do is to continue to pray those envies away in Jesus name 😆

  • Tell It Like It Is September 29, 2009 at 4:55 pm

This Lady is definately is in a league of her own in NOLLYWOOD – she doesnt even have to try hard to be recognised. She didnt call Oprah to ask her to feature her, she was minding her own business as she always does and this huge publicity happens. This is nothing but pure BLESSING from GOD. If Hollywood decides to do another African Movie like they did Blood Diamond and the other blockbuster, I know if they need a leading lady – no doubt in my mind they will give Genny a call. Now Genny what you need to make sure is that your MANAGEMENT is on point on the A game, from here on you need management and PR who are good at what they do. The sky is the limit from here on. Dont go hollywood, remain in Nollywood and demand whatever you deem fit. ON the continent of Africa you will always be our biggest actress. And we cherish you here.

  • eggone September 29, 2009 at 5:02 pm

Very happy for genevieve. I met her once in London’s westend and she seemed so down to earth and willing to engage me in conversation. I hope she continues to grow from strength to strength.

  • ladi September 29, 2009 at 11:06 pm

  • niyi September 29, 2009 at 11:46 pm

    Good job Genny!!!
Not too put a damper on this, Bella can you also do something on Uwem Akpan whose book “Say You are One of them” has been selected as Oprah’s book club, book of the month. The book an author get a mention at the end of the show. It’s a good read, plus I’m also advertising the author cause he is my friend.

  • Anyvic September 30, 2009 at 3:10 am

For those of you that would like to see the link of Genny featured in Oprah… you go, a link on youtube…

  • Tell it Like It is September 30, 2009 at 3:51 am

look at this nonsense – which doesnt surprise me. The woman gets recognise for once outside of the african community home and abroad, and here we go with those jealous haters with their stupid comparison – either you like Genevieve or you dont – clearly the constant haters have troated from the infamous blogs where they hate on her 24/7 and come on here to this respectable thread to talk nonsense. What has Rita Dominic got to do with it – Genny was recognised and we are simply appreciating her accomplishment for all the years of hardwork, we dont need no damn comparisons right now. Yeah right – Rita is better thats why she sells more movies than Genevieve – GTFOH (rollseyes).Whatever!!!!!

For once – stop the nonsense comparison and lets enjoy the moment. Gosh. There is room for everyone – no need to compare. Go on the other thread where it saids Rita and others have Glo endorsement and what not – and leave Genevieve alone to also enjoy a minute of shine on Oprah. Jeez.

And to sign off let me just say Genny is in her own league in nollywood – she dont need to make noise to be heard or recognised. Denial is a B*****

  • Tinto September 30, 2009 at 3:54 am

Please I have a question o! Did anyone watch the show? I just watched it on youtube. Let me try and get this straight, I think am missing something here…. ” Genevieve makes $6,500 a film, in a country where the average ANNUAL income is $400 (with a background of people hawking, typical African backward setting) that is big bucks.” What I saw was no image laundering for Nollywood Nigeria, it was still the same stereotype image they have of Africa. Or maybe I watched the wrong clip.

  • Anon123 September 30, 2009 at 5:08 am

To be honest, I was very disappointed with the Genny “shoutout.” Why did Oprah have to go and mention how much she makes per film? And then on top of that she had to say in a country where most people live on an average of “insert amount here” per year, that she was making quite a lot. Why didn’t she quantify how much the other people made as well? Is it really a compliment when in order to appreciate one person she has to mention just how “poor” the country is?

  • Som September 30, 2009 at 8:13 am

    Up Naija!!!!!!!!!!

  • Somi September 30, 2009 at 8:15 am

I am sooo psyched for her.. go Genevieve….You are the best.

  • kuro September 30, 2009 at 9:29 am

for real..this oprah woman wa oh..anyhow..I’m happy for Ms Gene..She didn’t need a proverbial Genie for this miracle..It was her time..She deserved it…Go Girl..

  • pam September 30, 2009 at 11:28 am

good for Genny. i saw rita domminics tweet regarding the mention and she seemed very excited for Genny.

  • Lara September 30, 2009 at 11:55 am

Genevieve is one of the best Nigeria has got, Rita is not compared to her any where.

So happy for her, she deserves it.

  • Lara September 30, 2009 at 12:02 pm

Genny is one of the best Nigeria has got.
Kudos to her, she deserved it.

  • xoliquoricexo September 30, 2009 at 2:43 pm

  • k.s October 1, 2009 at 5:08 am

  • seremi October 1, 2009 at 1:57 pm

who mentioned rita here? this is how people start wahala. jeez!!!!!

  • jennie October 1, 2009 at 6:48 pm

Please can I get the youtube link to watch the show please? I went to oprah’s website and I couldn’t find Genevieve there…

  • jennie October 1, 2009 at 7:19 pm

    where is the link please

  • Obi-talker October 2, 2009 at 12:58 am

Yeah in Nigeria, the average person makes $400 a year. I need to intensify my prayers….sorry I clicked on the link that someone put below. pls o can any body who watched this show…. I learnt that some people are dissapointed that Oprah did’t have a sit down with gennny. Infact now I am more confused because when bella said featured genny me I thot she meant interveiw her like other guests on the show. anyways even if it is just short docu of genny its is a good thing.

still I can’t understand why peolple below are fighting about rita and genny. wats the problem…exactly their both actresses. end of story.

  • Obi-talker October 2, 2009 at 1:03 am

several other naija bloggers have done posts on this…

  • Nneka October 2, 2009 at 1:47 am

I was excited for Genny, It made me proud.

    congrats girl,.keep reresenting us positively

  • alfreda October 2, 2009 at 11:59 am

my dear o. thats how people sit and start stupid comparisms. those two are good fiends

  • Aisha October 3, 2009 at 3:16 am

Go Genny, so glad that she was featured on Oprah, u go girl. The only thing that is annoying is how Nigerians are so quick to start wahala. 1st example, why are they now comparing her to Rita Dominic, just be happy for Genny now, this is her time, hopefully Rita’s time will come too and she is and will be celebrated. This is how beef starts. 2nd example, when Bellanaija noted that she assisted Oprah, people are insinuating that she is claiming, for what now. Be happy for Bella, I even read a fellow blogger i think Naijagal, saying that they do not claim like others do, and that they are the leaders and others follow(on this topic: Oprah/Genny). Why can’t Nigerians be united, why do we always envy others when people are doing bigger and better things. Naija people grow up and let us be united.

  • ibadillah muhammed nazir October 3, 2009 at 5:52 pm

you is the best. thanks for making us proud

  • Shola October 3, 2009 at 9:01 pm

Thanks Aisha for posting this comment. I am so happy for Genevieve that she is been recognised and celebrated. The problem with Africans (even though I hate to generalize) is that we find it difficult to celebrate people that are doing bigger things….this is her time and we should all unite and celebrate her achievement…It doesn’t do any good to compare anyone against each other…It might be someone else next time.
Genevieve enjoy your recognition and don’t let anyone put you down or tell you otherwise that you don’t deserve it because you do….

  • Obi-talker October 3, 2009 at 9:52 pm

Dear Shola yes you should be sorry for generalising. Have you ever been to a UK or American blog. You need to see the way they kill themselves over there infact we nigerians we’re too nice. so it is not AFRICANS it is the human nature. I am tired of the fact that when people talk they say we nigerians or we africans. Pls this is not a new thing. I don’t know why everybody is surprised at the debates in the comment section. This is why it is called a blog!!!!!!!!!!

  • latoto October 4, 2009 at 2:25 pm

she is lucky to be who she is and has always played a solid role on her packaging, but dnt compare with rita cos rita got her own standard too…..

  • teris October 5, 2009 at 3:22 am

    rita.. who? has got… what?

  • Tayo October 5, 2009 at 8:25 pm

At last something positive about Nigeria on Oprah.

  • MARBEL October 5, 2009 at 9:09 pm

  • Harmony October 8, 2009 at 1:47 pm

Genny baby, congratulations, you will always be my baby any time any day, go on girl i love u and thanks for making Nigeria and Africa as a whole happy. Raise ur head up girl u’re on top no matter what anybody else thinks, u’ve made, u’ve made it. Apology to those that are comparing u with someone.

  • Moyin Akinro October 8, 2009 at 3:07 pm

    congratulation Genevieve, keep it cool

  • mummum October 8, 2009 at 5:13 pm

she was picked to represent nollywood coz she is thin and pretty. period

  • Tell-It-Like-It-Is October 8, 2009 at 6:49 pm

I beg shut your mouth over there. I frequent many other blogs and i have a blog myself and the comment someone made earlier was right. There is so much backbiting with blogs – especially one idiot like that (i wont mention HIS name) – he steals others photo and when someone else steals HIS he will rant up and down that ppl dont give him props for a photo he supposedly took (am like abeg shut up that you mouth which as too much teeth in it). Out of all the African blogs Bellas is the one I RESPECT THE MOST, she doesnt stomp up and down fighting for claim that she posted some foto first or she had some interview first. Bella’s blog is one word “CLASSIC and TRUE” – I am a blog owner myself and Bella is my inspiration, I am not jealous of her, I admire her and love her and I am AFRICAN – there is room for everybody (stop that crabs in a barrel B.S). So screw all those haters. She has no reason to lie that the oprah ppl called her to get info. WTF does she have to lie for that she contributed to the Harpo team – didnt even Genny confirm it in her interview – Is Bella claiming to have won an oscar or something – so sue her for even commenting her blog contributed to Oprahs team research – SOme of you ppl have too much time on your hands to rant about nonsense. If you dont like this blog – abeg vamoose jare. We love it. Haters Haters Haters. Dont be surprise, cos Bellanaija is was and will be the most respectable and reputable blog in our time.

I just tell it like it is -cos i hate nonsense. Sorry Bella – I know you wouldnt have wanted me to go there – cos you like to keep it low, but i just had to go there. We appreciate your blog – Eff what everybody saids.

  • Dayveed October 8, 2009 at 7:17 pm

mummum said Gene was picked because she’s thin and pretty and i’m wondering if she should have been picked if she was fat and ugly, can’t you see that only thin people make progress in nolly/bolly.hollywood…get your mind right mum.

  • Olayinka October 9, 2009 at 4:22 pm

Though I’m not a fan, I have to applaud Genevieve for the journey so far. For those who feel its because she’s slim and pretty, I can only say that you are myopic narrow minded people, who do not believe that people can achieve and do extraordinary things regardless of their physical attributes. If you are to name top five popualr African actresses, Genevieve will count and for that success, lets applaud her and be happy that she’s given this country one more positive representation, so kudos to her.

  • Timothy Ebhodaghe October 10, 2009 at 4:26 pm

U go girl, Na U biko. I am and will always be proud to identify myself as a Nigeria anywhere in the world because of people like you who have over the years maintain a positive accomplishment. Congratulations.

  • charles October 10, 2009 at 5:57 pm

genevieve still remains the prettiest and best nollywood actress. her shoes are still large for any other babe to fill. Genevieve nnaji rocks

  • lilysaints October 11, 2009 at 8:38 pm

so proud of nigeria, tho am from another african country, but i think this was really good for her and the country as well.god bless the country and gene,i wish u all the best.

  • Timothy Ebhodaghe October 12, 2009 at 7:29 am

We are all one Africa, same brothers and sisters. I am proud to be a nigerian and mostly proud to be an African. Gene is a hard working and lucky girl and I am very proud of her acheivement. So, I will be more proud of her if she can use her influence to reach out to other African women who have been deprived of this same opportunity due to daily abuse and moslestations. This is a very big problem in Africa we must fight and put an end to. Most Africa wemen are in hell been inflicted on them by either their spouse, guadians and so on. If this is not stopped, if wemen continue not to have a voice like they do in develope countries I am afraid in the next century Africa will still be infested with that cronic desease called underdevelope. May God continue to bless Africa.

  • latoto October 12, 2009 at 9:17 am

thin oh,fat oh….all l believe is hard work and carriage,,,u might be thin but yet u dnt have it,so what is all this thin or fat lauguage..

  • mj October 14, 2009 at 8:56 am

she was chosen because she IS nollywoods biggest face. hands down! go to ANY country in the continent and they all know her. go abroad they all know her. congrats oh genny!

  • Timothy October 16, 2009 at 11:42 pm

Thank God she is thin and pretty and she deserve the award. can we end that conversation and move on to more important issue like women abuse in Africa.

  • Miss .W. October 21, 2009 at 11:40 am

i don’t understand all story about genevieve being chosen only becos she’s thin or watever nonsense…..i’d say she was chosen based on talent even though i believe OMOTOLA kud easily give her a run for her money…..other actresses seem to only know how to act as bitches or prostitutes in movies nowadays and moreover genevieve has come a long way!!…..

  • Onukwube October 21, 2009 at 3:41 pm

Genevieve Nnaji deserves it. Her karma has placed her not just in the position of an outstanding actor but that of a leader among her people. At a point in the past, a lot of people tried to stop her because they felt she was getting too popular. But u see, she is a star and none, not even clouds can stop a star from shining. Keep up the shine, sister!

  • Nkechi victor October 26, 2009 at 8:49 pm

    congratulation genny.Allah na ya baki.Keep shining.I love u.

  • FRANZEN November 28, 2009 at 8:18 pm

Greatness is achieved by hard work and determination, it is never grabbed by force. Gene. did not ask for her global recognition, she worked for it and merited it. She is one face in the emerging African movie industry that protrays originality and pride of her root. Gene you don’t need to go to hollywood to be a star. It is in your star to be a great woman. BRAVO!!!

Why do we like second rate all the time, her name is Genevivve Nnaji and not Julia Roberts, she has a life and also a name. We must always crave to protect our names and personalities. I sit and watch this happening daily and never fail to comment.
