Justice Ayotunde Phillips, Chief Judge of Lagos State, has set free 75 inmates from the Kirikiri maximum, medium, and female prisons.
The inmates, who were awaiting trial, were released on Tuesday during the judge’s visit to the detention facilities, Daily Post reports.
Three inmates were released from the maximum facility, 71 from the medium, and one from the female prison.
Phillips stated that she freed the inmates to reduce congestion in the prisons, and out of consideration for some of the inmates who had been waiting for trial for many years.
She revealed that various reforms are being introduced in the criminal justice system to ease the issue of overcrowded prisons. One of these reforms includes the introduction of bail guidelines.
The judge reportedly urged the inmates to “go and sin no more.”
