Surgery on 7-Month Baby - July 2014 - BN News - 02
The University College Hospital Ibadan, Oyo achieved a great feat.

Doctors at the teaching hospital had a successful heart surgery on a seven month old baby, the youngest ever cardiac patient ever operated in any public health facility in Nigeria.

The surgery was performed with experts from America, Canada and India. The girl Enriola who weighed 3.8kg could not grow the natural pace because of the hole in her. Her mother Olubunmi Fakoya said she was diagnosed at three months old and since then Enriola has been living in and out of the hospital

Head of Cardiology, Kamar Adeleke (Head, Tri-State Cardiovascular Institute, Delaware, USA), revealed that it was a delicate surgery as Enriola had emaciated so much, her chances were very slim.

Two hours after the surgery, the happy mother shared with Channels TV the positive changes and improvement.

The information made it seem as though this was accomplished by Nigerian doctors who work in Nigeria. Congratulations to the team effort though

They could be Nigerian surgeons coming from the names countries to offer their services. There are several of them doing that these day.

@Tunmi if you live outside the country then you are pardoned. I believe you know what cardiology is from your biology days cos you don’t have to be a Med student to know that. So for you to think Nigeria has developed to the extent of having enough equipment and knowledge to carry out the youngest ever is the biggest joke of the year.Pls,lets be true to ourselves, not even our private Uni student have such knowledge. The best place to aquire such is outside the country and I mean, reading it in textbooks doesn’t equal knowledge.

I want to be happy for this news but I just can’t. 21st century when hospitals around the world have celebrated this fit years ago and we are just here gloating. About what 35yrs old doctors do with their eyes closed. When we have 70 yrs old professors who have colonised the teaching hospitals made life he’ll for young aspiring doctors. Teaching hospital are research based institution. Wake up NMA and quit going on about how you are under funded etc. Standardise your profession mentor young people that are aspiring to be doctors quit plarying around and going on strike any giving excuse yes the govt are neglecting the hospitals etc NMA can com together and as a group set a world class diagnostic and medical center with state of the act equipment live the teaching hospitals to the govt by the time they don’t see doctors rushing to work for the hospitals they willunderstand
