BN Beauty - BellaNaija- August 2015The quest for perfect beauty is a never-ending one. From finding out what ‘Strobing‘ is to discovering how many kitchen items you can use to get glowing skin – the questions keep rolling in. That is why Google.com decided that towards the end of each year, they will let you in on the top beauty questions being asked out there.

With the click of the ‘Search’ button, Google has the one beauty-related question Nigerians ask the most, and that is – “How Can I Make Hair Feel Soft?”

Today, BN Beauty is going to dish out the answer.

Now, there are many ways to get soft hair and a number of products that can help out. You can achieve this through a number of ways like conditioning, using various treatments and more. Let’s take a look at using a conditioner and some natural treatments we hold dear.

Conditioning

Conditioning your hair is a great way to add moisture after your strands have been stripped of its natural Sebum post-shampoo. Get a very rich conditioner e.g one containing shea butter; and apply that generously to your hair. When you’re sure your hair is completely drenched in the conditioner, wrap it up and cover with a shower cap.

A great trick I learned from hairstylist Tippi Shorter (Global Artistic Director for Textured Hair, Aveda) is to get a hand towel, dampen it with water and place in a microwave for 20 seconds. Please note it should not be left in the microwave for more that the stipulated time. When you bring it out, wrap it over the shower cap and leave for about 5-8 minutes. This acts as a make-shift steamer for the hair strands, which helps open up the cuticles and lets the conditioner penetrate the hair follicles.

After you’re done, remove the towel and shower cap and rinse hair with cold water. After this you can continue your treatment as you usually would. You can  follow this treatment with a leave-in conditioner for longer lasting soft and supple hair.

Natural Treatments
I get it, sometimes you just want to let nature work it’s magic on your tresses. So, here are  a few natural treatments to get soft hair.

Coconut Milk Treatment

This treatment can work great for your hair. It is good for protecting hair against the sun’s harmful UV rays and is packed with fatty acids and protein to help reduce breakage and damage, while getting it soft.

Simply mix;
1 cup of coconut milk
1 peeled and mashed avocado
1 tablespoon of natural honey

After you have shampooed your hair, apply the mixture directly and massage it into your scalp. Then wrap your head with a small towel (you may decide to pre-heat the towel in a microwave for 20 seconds) and leave on for 15 – 60 minutes. When the time is up, wash it out and style as usual.

Avocado Treatment

This is another great way to get soft hair. The avocado is a super fruit with hair softening, moisturizing and conditioning powers. Packed with fatty acids, protein and amino acids, it will kick dryness out and save the day.

Simply mix;
1 peeled avocado
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon of jojoba oil

Put the ingredients in a bowl and and mix them together until you get a smooth mixture. After shampooing, massage the mixture into your hair all the way to your scalp and leave it in for 20 minutes. When done, rinse out and style as usual.

Honey Treatment

Here’s a sweet alternative to getting soft locs. Being a humectant, honey holds on to water molecules which makes for longer lasting moisture for your hair. It also has zinc, iron, vitamins and more nutrients that aid hair growth.

Simply mix;
1/2 a cup of honey
2 tablespoons of oilve oil

Mix the honey and olive oil together in a bowl and heat in a microwave for about 30 seconds. Apply it in your hair and cover with a shower cap. Leave this on for about 15 – 30 minutes and then rinse out. After this, go ahead and style as you usually would.
