On Friday, November 6th, the Agip Recital Hall of Muson Centre was transformed into a magical wonderland, as an all woman ensemble of Titilope Sonuga, Ruby Gyang, Omolara, Falana, Deborah Ohiri and the Girlz Rule Band, took the stage for Titilope Sonuga’s ‘Becoming.’

It was a night filled with emotion as the audience was immersed in the breathtaking poetry of Titilope Sonuga, the Intel She Will Connect Ambassador for Nigeria.

‘Becoming’ told the complex story of transitioning from girlhood to womanhood. Each poem punctuated by beautiful vocal performances from popular songbirds, Ruby Gyang and Omolara. Talented multi-instrumentalist Falana, and traditional chants by Deborah Ohiri also provided inspiration and entertainment to the audience. The show was underscored by the talented all woman Girlz Rule Band.

In all, it was a night that elicited laughter, tears, and deep reflection as the story unfolded and closed to a standing ovation.

Omg! I was there and it was sooo amazing. A lot of people cried, guys and girls… I think what makes her poerty amazing is that she’s not trying hard like most poets to sound cool, she speaks from the soul and her words are so moving, though-provoking and empowering. I swear this babe is one of naija’s best kept secrets and I hope she blows up on an international level.

I photographered the event and it was an awesome show with a super-awesome cast. Falana should be much bigger than she is right now. She’s on her way. Lara was breathtaking even in rehearsals. Debbie has an amazing gift of storytelling through indigenous songs. Ruby is our own lady of soul. And Titi finds a way to express all those strong emotions we feel with words. Well done ladies. Well done.
