I’ve decided to do this post because Halloween is coming up soon! But before we get into the nail art, you need to know how to pain your nails properly for a good base for nail art.

First, start off with clean, well groomed nails.

We’ve talked about different ways to get your fingers manicure ready (and toes pedicure ready) for some colour, see those posts here and here. Make sure your nails are filed to your desire shape (either natural or fancy), your cuticles are pushed back and your nail plate is free of any debris, oil or old nail polish colour. You want fresh clean nails.

Next, pick a nail polish colour. If it’s too thick, it won’t apply well and it wont last long. thin polish quickly floods your nails and cuticles causing stains especially if the polish is a dark colour. Thin polish is always quit sheer and light so you’ll need multiple coats to create an opaque colour.

Once you have a perfect consistency of nail polish, it’s time to apply.

The first thing you should do, is wipe one side of the nail polish brush on the neck of the bottle to make sure the majority of the polish is on one side of the brush, that’s the side you’ll use to paint your nails. When that polish finishes, dip your brush back into the bottle and do the same thing all over again (the videos will help with demonstrations).

Try not to start too close to your cuticle to avoid stains and flooding, this will help your DIY manicure look professionally done. If you make mistakes you can always go back with nail polish remover to make corrections using an orange stick, cotton wool or a cotton bud.

After you entire nail is covered in colour, coat the free edge of your nail by adding a coat of polish around the tip of your nail to help your manicure last longer.

One major tip for painting you dominant hand using your non dominant hand is to move your dominant hand while the non dominant stays still holding your brush (because you have more control over your dominant). Click this post here for more tips.

The last step is top coat. Apply your top coat the same way you did the base coat/nail colour and make sure to coat the tip of your nail with top coat for a long lasting manicure.

Perfecting this takes practise so keep practicing. Watch the videos for more details and demonstrations.
