The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Jimi Agbaje, says he lost the governorship election to All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, because of the suppression of votes in his stronghold areas.
According to Punch, Agbaje said threats, coupled with the events that occurred during the Presidential election led to the low turnout in the governorship election with less than 20 percent of registered voters coming out to vote. He said,
From the outset it was clear that the numbers were on our side and naturally, that was our comparable strength but the moment you had the numbers slashed, then we were at a disadvantage.
The strategy of the other side was to make sure that those numbers did not come out to vote and to that extent it has worked in their favour.
He added that his supporters were faced with oppression and intimidation and decided to sit home rather than risk their lives at the polling units. He however refused to comment on whether he will challenge the election results in court.
