Hollywood’s New It Girl Lupita Nyong’o was honoured on Saturday 4th January 2014 at the 25th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival in California.
The Kenyan actress was presented with the Breakthrough Performance award for her role in the much buzzed about Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave at the awards gala night.
The Elie Saab couture clad actress was presented the award by fellow 12 Years a Slave actress Alfre Woodard.
“Whip out your sunglasses darling…a star has arrived”, was what Alfre said before giving her the award,
In her tearful acceptance speech, the former Shuga actress spoke on taking her family to Louisiana to the plantation that Patsey (her character in “12 Years a Slave”) was raised on. “I played a suffering role, but I did not suffer. Thanks to director Steve McQueen for creating a family on set.”
The Breakthrough Performance award has been presented in the past to Jennifer Hudson, Mariah Carey and Marion Cotillard.
The awards gala also presented honors to Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, Steve McQueen, Matthew McConaughey, Bruce Dern, Thomas Newman and the cast of “American Hustle.”
The Festival runs January 3-14, 2014.
