Social Media signals can and is actually beginning to tell us how Nigeria’s unique commerce and business landscape is spoiling for an outburst. No where is communication and commerce so intricately linked than in Africa’s most populous country. We value relationships and community above all else – and as such social media is teaching us in real-time, about who we are as consumers, how we can be approached and, even engaged in business. The traffic, demography and connection rate over the years only indicate an imminent explosion. Nigeria being Africa’s most populous country where values such as relationships and community has pride of place is also where social media has become a platform, like we’ve never seen in Africa, giving us fresh insight into Africa’s next economic, political, business and, needless to say, social tipping points.

The Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC) is organising a panel discussion, which brings together a group of successful women entrepreneurs who are using social media in innovative and interesting ways to grow and promote their enterprises. They will share key experiences of using social media tools and, through a facilitated discussion, will explore the benefits and challenges they encountered. Social media (and more generally, information technology) holds a lot of potential for showcasing a brand, identifying prospects and converting them to customers, growing a loyal community of customers and supporters, increase digital exposure, enhancing company trustworthiness, cut marketing costs and increasing sales. However, social media needs to be applied within a strategically thought-out plan, with an understanding of how it fits in within each company’s unique circumstances. The knowledge that participants will get from our panel will empower them to go forth and use social media appropriately. Social media has rapidly become a vital part of many Nigerian businesses’ marketing and branding toolkit. This is not surprising when one considers that the number of online Nigerians is estimated to be 48 million (about 28% of the entire population), which represents significant business opportunities. As SMW 2014’s theme states: a connected Africa is the future. This is true for both individuals and organisations, who can explore, identify and benefit from the networks and platforms that social media enables.
The event will be moderated by Oreoluwa Somolu, the founder and Executive Director of the Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC)
