According to Ezinne Akudo, “We live in a world where women are abused daily and are unable to speak up. One out of four women experience some form of sexual violence in their lifetime. This crime can take place at anytime and can happen to anyone regardless of tribe, religion or social class. Sadly, the society’s response to this heinous crime has led victims to believe that silence is the best option. However, Speaking up is our greatest weapon in this fight against sexual violence.”

The Centre with provide free services in the areas of Crisis Response, Counseling & Support, Court Advocacy, Education & Outreach with the support of the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender, The Domestic and Sexual Violence response team and the Mirabel Center.

    It gladdens my heart when I hear of things like this. Gives me hope that in this day and age, young and beautiful women can still be useful to society AND keep their legs closed. God bless you for helping your fellow women. This is what feminism should be all about: women helping women. #girlpower #respect

      Look I liked all you said except for that legs closed thing. If they want to open their legs, they are free to. That is also feminism.

      You have a point because feminism is also meant to promote choice. But I just find it more impressive when women chose to work hard instead of taking the easy way out. For years, women have been considered the “fairer” sex, the “weaker” sex. We were treated as just sex symbols. That same thing is what has derailed the cause of feminism because when women choose to open their legs, unfortunately it gives men the opportunity to say “we said it: all women depend on sex to move foward” which is so ignorant and very untrue. I mean, don’t you hear men saying that kind of thing all the time? Sad, but that’s what we live in. Ideally, a woman should not be judged unfairly for the choices she makes and that’s part of the message of feminism but its just not feasible. So, I guess what I meant was that I’m happy that with something like this men can look at a woman and say “wow, women can also accomplish stuff using other things i.e. her brain, her determination, etc and not just her beauty or her body”. To me, women with achievements like these butress the point feminists have been trying to make all these years.
      Sorry for my epistle but I hope you see where I’m coming from.

    Nice one girl!
    God bless you for this.
    This goes to show you’re an intelligent young lady who has used or still using her reign wisely unlike some attention seeking ex beauty queens who ended up in the bed of someone old enough to be their father lol

    Good job, but the location is not accessible to most of the people who face rape in the state of lagos. rape is highly correlated to social economic status. People in the kosofe LGA or mowe surroundings wont be spending their hard earned naira to come out way in lekki .Its appreciated, Some people in this nigeria think that if they dont open shop on the island, they can never make it at all.Narrow minded, we are the cause of our own demise

      Yeah maybe clinics in each local government area. That, I hope, is the future of this organization. That means hobnobbing and banquets and fundraising to raise money for the building, suppkies, and salary for the professionals

      Pishoun, Ezinne has also collaborated with Easy Taxi. Easy Taxi will provide FREE transportation to any victims directly to the rape crisis center, to hospitals, to courts etc. An announcement on this will be made next week.

      Thank you for this comment.

    Good thinking but not going to be effective in the long run. Anyone who knows about rape victims know they suffer from shame. They would hardly walk into a public building! More effective will be counselling phone lines after which private meetings can be scheduled for such victims. Even court cases of rape victims should be handled as discreetly as possible sef as not to make them feel more shame, that’s until they’re ready to come out openly about it, if ever. She tried sha, hopefully the next person will take it further.

    Good job, ms Ekudo. This is a much needed crucial issue facing Nigerians and it’s time to address it. This is the real definition of feminism(even though I don’t care about it) if there’s ever confusion on who and what is a feminist about. A woman using her brain/intelligence to make a difference in the society.

    A great Initiative I must commend, I am also passionate about women and girls. Just a little input. Last week, a friend of one year opened up on her most darkest secret which happened when she was 16. She is 38 now and I am the second person she is telling this. She told the first person-her mother, last year. If a South Korean girl, raped by 6 boys at the age of 16 could keep such unholy experience for 22 years, then innovations to harness this wrong must be carefully and strategically addresses;
    =Victims are always but not limited to poor, helpless and underpriviledged girls who mostly live in semi-rural and rural areas.
    =Victims usually have low self esteem
    =The society has attatched a sign post on the victim which says DON”T GET RAPED rather than DON’T RAPE.
    =The Nigerian Criminal Law states that PENETRATION must be proved. = I wonder if we can find witnesses for Rape cases.
    Opinion;
    Reach out to every school and drop contacts. You can do it by reaching out to sister organisations, Head teachers Organisations, Teachers day etc. Religious Organisations should not be left out.
    Succeed in prosecuting two cases.
    Show passion.
    The sky is your limit.
    Congrats

      @Lin, that comment, if intended to be a joke, came across as completely mean. You NEVER EVER tell someone to kill himself or herself. You don’t know what sort of breaking point they’re at when you make these flippant comments. Be human first, then be funny later.

      @kale, I’m not sure if your being in the hospital has to do with finding this girl with another man, but please don’t get yourself depressed over someone who doesn’t feel the same way about you. Talk to people who you trust, they’ll make you see things in a different light. Take it easy and keep your head up.

    A laudable initiative, I’m very proud even though I don’t know her from Adam.
    I think though that she will have to do more than just open fancy doors in fancy locations. She will have to go out there n literally coax victims to accept help. Bearing inmind the stigma these victims will face, its understandable that they’ll be hesistant to trust anyone n would rather lick their wounds in private. I agree that Schools and religious organisations should be targeted. Please also go to the slums and not so nice areas and carry out awareness programmes. More grease to your elbows.
    Now to Anna, I actually feel sad for her and I wish people will quit being so judgmental. I mean come on, the girl is young, I should think tops 20 years. How many of us were smart at that age? How many of us still keep our legs closed now for that matter? Its so easy to judge because we have been lucky to escape thus far. She didn’t commit a greater sin than most of us, she was just unfortunate that the human being she was so starry eyed n stupid abt is just a He goat.
    In as much as it is preached that ladies shine their eyes wide because they have so much more to lose, let’s not keep giving these men a free pass mbok. There were two people in that room or whereever it was that they got down.

    We are extremely proud of Ezinne and her partners for this platform. We hope victims will allow this initiative to help and change their lives. If you know anybody suffering from this trauma – help them and introduce them to The eight Foundation – after all, transportation is free.
