Film industry mogul Harvey Weinstein has been ousted from his own company The Weinstein Company following sexual harassment claims made against him by several women.

A statement released by the board of the company said Weinstein has been terminated from his position as co-chairman of the company.

The statement said his termination was a result of “new information about misconduct by Harvey Weinstein that has emerged in the past few days.”

Harvey had, according to The Hollywood Reporter, been offered to settle with the company and leave, but he refused, saying the scandal would blow over.

The sexual allegation claims uncovered by The New York Times goes back decades, with several women still coming forward to recount details of their experience with the producer.

Weinstein is reported to have reached financial settlements with at least 8 women in over the years.

The firing of Weinstein from his company has been described by several in the industry as a welcome move.

Jenni Konner, executive producer of “Girls” said it “is going to scare any man in Hollywood using his power for anything but making movies and television,” and described it as a “moment we look back on and say, ‘That’s when it all started to change.’”
